2015 saw a banner growing year in Piemonte, and San Giuliano’s Barbaresco glows with a brilliant ruby hue, a hint at its glorious palate. Rose petals, crushed river rocks, peppery spices, cedar and loam frame the succulent raspberries and juicy black cherries in this captivating Barbaresco. Chewy tannins fill the mouth, complemented by a sweet inner lift, and lively acidity; the wine’s elegant mineral core propels its sustained finish, where sweet fruits linger, deliciously. Deriving from the estate’s southwest and southeast-facing vineyards with limestone marl soils, grapes ferment in stainless steel for seven to ten days; the wine ages in half Slovenian botti and half barriques for 18 to 24 months, followed by an additional six months in bottle before release. Enjoyable now with liberal decanting, this wine will become even lovelier as it matures. Just 500 cases made.

The small winery of San Giuliano rests its head on the historic hillside vineyard of the same name but subsumes a total of 7 hectares of vineyards spread throughout the Piemonte zones of Roero, Asti, Neive, and Barbaresco. Owner-enologist Giulio Pastura carries on his grandfather’s trade but has turned from bulk sales to high quality bottlings.
Giulio and his wife, Mariella Stupino, do both the vineyard and the cellar work themselves, producing a varied line of reliable wines from the region’s native Nebbiolo, Moscato, Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis, and Brachetto. Their lovely, accessible Barbarescos follow the tradition of aging in oak botti for 18 months.
