This wine truly reflects its pedigree given the meticulous treatment of grapes in the vineyard and wine in the cellar. Intense ruby red in color, this ’04 Brunello Riserva is full-bodied and warm on the palate, bursting with notes of red berries, violet petals, spices, and warm loam, followed by subtle notes of coffee, leather and peppery herbs. The finish is long, with round and refined tannins complementing the wine’s juicy texture; now with more than a decade of age, this Brunello Riserva is firing on all cylinders! Deriving from the vines grown in a south-southwest-facing plot rich in calcium and clay, the grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled concrete tanks for about 22 days; the wine ages first for about 24 months in tonneaux, some new, followed by bottle aging, to be released six years after harvest.

Located near the legendary estates of Biondi Santi in the Montalcino region of La Croce, rising Brunello star Poggio San Polo uses non-interventionist methods on its 52-acre estate. San Polo’s La Croce vineyards stand at some of the highest points in the Montalcino, 1,300 feet above sea level; this altitude provides exceptional aromatics, structure and acidity, but San Polo’s protocol works to add richness and fruit. Leonardo LoCascio and Marilisa Allegrini bought the property in the past decade, and with their purchase came changes in protocol that upped the quality of this estate’s wines. For example, San Polo now farms its grapes sustainably without chemical intervention and its new winemaker Nicola Biasi and new consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella, the man behind Campania cult classic Terra di Lavoro, work in tandem to make the most of its grapes. The resulting wines speak of San Polo’s superlative terroir, typicity, and technicque.
