Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici 1995 750ml
Rich red and black fruits dance with worn saddle leather, crushed rocks, pressed mint, and warm earth in this beautifully crafted ’95 Taurasi Radici; two decades of maturity have added a gloss of tertiary notes like black tea, truffles and potpourri. While this Aglianico bristled with tannins upon release, time has tamed them and the wine now flows like smooth silk to a lingering, mellow finish. Deriving from vines grown in the mineral-laden, volcanic soiled Montemarano and Mirabella Eclano vineyards, the Aglianico grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about ten days; the wine ages in a combination of barrique and cask for about 24 months, followed by two years in bottle before release.
Fiorano No. 32 Bianco 1995 750ml
Racy and nervy, the No. 32 Bianco frames its succulent and dried orchard and stone fruits with potpourri, smoky minerals, and a “cidery” quality that’s reminiscent of Gravner’s amphora-aged amber wines. Textured and piquant, this ’95 Fiorano Bianco fills the mouth with a chewy tannin-like feel, making it a rare white that drinks very much like a red. This mature white wine defies what we think we know about Italian whites, offering a tremendous drinking experience for wine connoisseurs; despite three decades of maturity, this powerful, stable white opens with hours of aeration to show a kaleidoscopic palate. Fiorano Bianco, crafted from organically grown Malvasia di Candia, is an unusual, rare white that stands the test of time and offers a picture of meticulous, organic winemaking as it was practiced decades ago.
Fiorano No. 45 Bianco 1995 750ml
Deep bright golden yellow, this Fiorano Bianco shows youthfulness even with decades of age. Offering an intense, full bouquet spiked with white flowers, candied fruit, stewed and fresh stone fruits, spice and earthiness, this ’95 Bianco is concentrated and complex. It envelops the mouth with a rich texture and an indescribable palate of spiced fruits and minerals. Fiorano Bianco, crafted from organically grown Malvasia di Candia, offers a unique expression of its vintage and its individual aging barrel; this is a rare, unusual white that stands the test of time and offers a picture of meticulous, organic winemaking as it was practiced decades ago.
Fiorano No. 48 Semillon 1995 750ml
Luscious honeyed fruit dances with rare herbs, bees wax, menthol and exotic spices in this ’95 Sémillon that almost bursts with acidic energy. At once racy and mature, this Sémillon unfurls on the palate to show a velvety texture, and its surprisingly youthful acidity propels it to a sustained, complex finish. This Fiorano Sémillon combines the characteristics and layers of a mature white Burgundy, the dried tropical fruit of a Sauternes, the texture and body of an Alsatian white, and the oxidative minerality of an aged Sherry, all together in one bottle. The product of dedication and passion from Principe Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi and his Fiorano estate, whose avant-garde approach of organic agriculture and the use of a magical mold was way ahead of its time, this wine shows a rare ability to age.
Pelissero Barbaresco 1995 750ml
Inviting, textured and fragrant, this ’95 Barbaresco welcomes you with sun-warmed red and blue fruits, crushed flower petals, baking spices, espresso, and smoky minerals; kisses of umami, truffle and black tea show entrancing tertiary development. This ’95 Barbaresco reflects its low production vintage in its copious dry extract and round, fine-grained tannins that coat the palate, and maturity shows in the wine’s silky, weightless mouth-feel. A seductive, mineral-laden finish lingers, satisfyingly. Since 2001, the Barbaresco Annata has been called Barbaresco Tulin. Grapes derive from the estate’s southeastern-facing, mineral-rich vineyards in the villages of Treiso and Neviglie, located within the Barbaresco zone; the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled steel, and the wine ages in a combination of barriques and oak casks, about half new, for about twenty months before bottling and resting for nine months.
Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino 1995 750ml
Ethereal and elegant, this late harvest ’95 Brunello layers its spicy red fruits with crushed river rocks, dried flower petals, underbrush, warm loam, and truffles; tertiary notes like soy, umami and saddle leather dance mysteriously. Its tannins have mellowed to silkiness, but this wine is remarkably fresh, powered by a solid core of acidity that drives it to a sophisticated, lingering finish. A blend of the estate’s vineyards, grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ages for 36 months in barrels, followed by a year in bottle before release.
Guado al Tasso Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore 1995 750ml
Graphite, potpourri, black tea, umami, and spices frame the delicate red and blue fruits in the ethereal ’95 Guado al Tasso. This is a beautifully mature Super Tuscan, and it shows off its Bordeaux styling in its elegance and balance. Savory minerals cling to the cheeks as this wine unspools upon the palate, filling the mouth with a fine, sophisticated texture--this ’95 Guado al Tasso is a sterling example of a mature Super Tuscan. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot mixed with other red grape varieties, Guado al Tasso is a thoughtful Bordeaux-style blend. Antinori ferments each parcel separately, blending the mix after a year of aging; after blending, the wine ages for six months in barriques before bottling.
Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello Riserva 1995 750ml
Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 1995 750ml
Now with two decades of maturity, this benchmark Brunello is just entering its drinking window. This is a wine that defies time, growing better, mellower, more nuanced and more meditative with each passing year--even as it retains its vibrancy and its fresh Montalcino fruit. Biondi-Santi crafts its "Annata," or normale bottlings, from fruit grown on vines between 10-25 years old in marl soil. Vinified in temperature-controlled cement tanks and aged in Slovenian oak casks, Biondi-Santi Brunello is extraordinarily age-worthy, balanced and beautiful, akin to Brunello's answer to Burgundy. Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino is the standard for the wine--which only makes sense since the wine originated at this estate more than 130 years ago.
Giuseppe Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella 1995 375ml
As you’d expect any dessert wine from Quintarelli to do, this one confounds the senses and exceeds expectations. It’s simply sublime. This ’95 takes its port-like feel and puts a Quintarelli kaleidoscope spin on the whole endeavor. Dark chocolate cherry cordial, Christmas fruit cake, a soupcon of espresso, floating rose petals, and hints of apricot dance in dizzying progression across the palate of this wine. It’s intense, incredible, delicious and drinking to the end of the decade.
