Radikon Ribolla Gialla 2001 750ml
Pursuing an ideal taste from the memory and methods of his grandfather’s wine from the 1930s, Radikon employs a deceptively simple philosophy: to produce wines that are wholly natural. His practices have given him a cult of personality status with followers who dubbed him a "maverick" and a "radical," and called his wines "wild" and "unconventional." His methodology and wine production result from a set of guiding principles, a seemingly forward-thinking framework deeply rooted in traditional techniques. Radikon’s methods reflect the style typical of the Collio area, the heartland of Friuli, with the use of large oak barrels (botti), manual harvesting, and extended maceration periods. He both actively encourages and stands alone in this highly unusual white wine-making practice of a 40-60 day maceration session. Such long durations are atypical even for red wine-making, for most everyday reds see a more rapid process of a week’s maceration. It’s Radikon’s hewing to an exacting traditional manner that lodges him firmly within the winemaking vanguard.
Gravner Ribolla Gialla 2008 750ml
Rainy and lush, 2008 saw an ideal growing season for Josko Gravner--this avant garde winemaker likes a season that lets his Ribolla Gialla grow a little bit of botrytis, the “noble rot.” Concentrated, intense and textured, this ’08 Ribolla Gialla is a triumph. This finessed wine layers its succulent orchard fruits with warm baking spices, exotic white flowers, tea leaves, toasted nuts, citrus zest and hints of mushroom. Uncurling on the palate, this ’08 Ribolla Gialla offers myriad layers of notes, all conveyed on an energetic yet subtly weighty palate; it’s extraordinary! This amber wine is best served like a red, decanted and at cellar temperature; enjoy it with hearty fare--its palate will stand up to it. Like Gravner’s Breg, a blend of white grapes, this mono-varietal Ribolla Gialla ferments on the skins for about seven months in amphora and then ages for six years in cask before bottling, without fining or filtration.
Gravner Breg 2008 750ml
Gravner’s fans are certain to adore the ’08 Bianco Breg; it’s a winemaking tour de force that balances the wine’s exuberant fruit with ideal acidity and a lush, velvety texture. Crushed river rocks, delicate toasted nuts, citrus zest and herbs frame the wine’s juicy orchard fruits. As seductive as this wine’s nose is, its texture will make you fall in love--it grips every corner of the mouth, building to a complex, lingering finish that just doesn’t quit. After growing his grapes with strict biodynamic protocol, Gravner lets his white grapes sit on the skins in his amphora for around seven months, fermenting each grape varietal separately; then he blends and ages the wine in casks for about six years before bottling, without fining or filtration. Unlike some other natural winemakers, Gravner does add small amounts of sulfur, believing that a tiny amount will keep his living, breathing wines from oxidizing.

Miani Ribolla Gialla Pettarin 2013 750ml
Rich, thrilling and very emblematic of this indigenous grape, the Ribolla Gialla wafts with orchard fruits, salty caramel, baking spice and white flowers, while on the palate, this dry, mineral-inflected white is deeply textured and vivacious, morphing as it crosses the tongue, leaving a silky mouth-feel in its wake. Miani privileges terroir in making its wines, and thus presses gently, ferments in barrels and only employs malolactic fermentation except for Chardonnay, all without temperature control and using only indigenous yeasts.
Gravner Pinot Grigio Riserva 2006 750ml
The final bottling of this unique Gravner Pinot Grigio, this copper-colored ’06 Riserva is unlike any other Pinot Grigio you’ve ever tasted. Coffee, crushed walnuts, baking spices, wet river rocks, and green tea frame the orchard and citrus fruits in this textured, layered Pinot Grigio. At once weighty, vibrant and mineral-rich, this wine wraps the palate with a tannic grip and a brocade-like silkiness. There’s a sneaky power in this Pinot Grigio, and it comes from the wine’s sturdy mineral core--this is a wine to be savored, meditated upon, and remembered. Grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts and without temperature control with extended maceration in amphorae; the wine ages for six years in large oak casks and is bottled without any fining or filtration, where it sits for another three years before release. Gravner made just over 100 cases of this last Pinot Grigio bottling.
