Begali’s delectable Valpolicella Classico is easy to pop and pour and enjoy again and again! Pure red berries cavort on a bed of woodland moss, wildflower petals, spices, river rocks and earth in Begali’s charming ’17 Valpolicella Classico. This wine is about food-friendly immediate drinkability, and it shows an alluring balance between its fine tannins and bright acidity that linger on the savory, mineral-laden finish. A blend of 60% Corvina, 30% Rondinella, and the remainder local grape varietals, grapes ferment in stainless steel, and the wine ages for a year in botti before resting in bottle. more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “This is a serious little Chianti from Radda’s high altitude (400+ meters), on prized soils consisting of limestone, produced with a long maceration (25 days). The best tip we can provide on this wine is to wait a second … let this wine breathe. There is some immediate grip on this succulent and savory expression. Give it a two hour decant or have it on day two for the optimal experience, and know the best is yet to come. With aeration you can expect mulberry, raspberries, sour cherries, crushed violets, tomato leaf, olives, potpourri, tar, and green herbs. This is the very definition of what is meant by a high-toned, bright and pure Chianti that begs for food.”

You have heard us scream about it before, 2016 was not only the year of Tuscany, but Sangiovese. The year simply did not end with the perfect Sassicaia or the cult-like Matarocchio over in the tiny hamlet of Bolgheri. Sure, there was Tignanello, Percarlo, Le Pergole Torte, Flaccianello, and now it is 2016 Brunello di Montalcino that is rewriting all the books. However, before all this noise began, there was the little overachieving, single vineyard Poggio Valente from Scansano. It is here in the hills inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea between Bolgheri and the border of Lazio, that Tuscany’s native Sangiovese, known as Morellino in these parts, excelled with unrivalled value. Monica Larner stated, “the 2016 Poggio Valente is precise and direct, the result of a lot of enological brain power and Coastal Tuscany's answer to Brunello Montalcino.” And for those keeping score, it is the highest reviewed Poggio Valente in twenty years of keeping Tuscan enthusiasts satisfied.\

Well, the IWM team revisited the 2016 Poggio Valente once again, and we emphatically agree. We would add the extra bottle age has done its job and this wine is rocking today with a quick decant! Super expressive right from the pull of the cork, and the wine becomes even more intoxicating with just a little airtime. This is 100% unadulterated, premiere cru-like Sangiovese under forty dollars that will transport you to the Maremma with a more Mediterranean take on Tuscany’s noble native varietal.

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “There is a whole lot of bottled awesomeness here. We had this after some grand cru classé Bordeaux and it held its own quite well. And from the classic vintage of 2016, it’s a whole lot of wine under $38 a bottle. The wine begins with earthy nuances and unfolds too much of the flavor spectrum, you can expect cherry galore, dried strawberries, tomato leaf, coffee bean, saddle leather, baked earth, cinnamon stick, nutmeg and wild herbs. The wine is structured with firm tannins that loosen with aeration. In fact, we recommend a one hour decant if drinking this age-worthy wine today. I just think this is the perfect food wine, and for me that begins with a sausage pizza, or since we are in the Maremma, some pasta with wild boar ragu.”

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Here is a release that recalls the glories of the ripe and sumptuous 2015 release – even to this date we still have many clients asking for the wine today. For IWM, it is not just the 2017 Tignanello or even 2017 Solaia that should be watched, it is this Chianti Classico Gran Selezione that demands attention, as few wines have improved so greatly over the past few years and are delivered at this price point. Like the 2017 Tignanello and Solaia, as well as, Guado al Tasso for that matter, the vintage allows for approachability and this is serious, silky crowd-pleaser, jaw-droppingly delicious right out of the bottle with four years of age. Ripe black cherries, even macerated cherries, plum and once you get past the generous fruit, you begin to experience wild herbs, cedar, earth and stony minerality. Stunningly elegant and inviting with its almost creamy texture, but there is balance with freshness and acidity. It has plenty of years ahead of it but hard to resist today. This is a MUST stop on the Chianti trail with dinner at Osteria di Passignano - right there in the historic vineyards. Simply magical – that goes for the wine, vineyard and restaurant.” more info

2016 Poderi Colla Barolo Bussia Dardi le Rose
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “This wine picks up where the more delicate Barbaresco Roncaglie left off. If Barbaresco is the “Queen of Wine,” then Barolo is simply the “King of Wine” with these side-by-side expressions we tasted. The same Poderi Colla thumbprint is here, but the Barolo Bussia packs Monforte muscle with more concentration and depth. And like the Barbaresco, it begins with a seductive nose that is well-worth the price of admission alone, as this captures Barolo’s signature tar and roses, along with sweet red fruit. On the palate, there is succulent red fruit nuances of dark cherry, candied berries, licorice, a touch of citrus, dried flowers, tea, eucalyptus, smoke, and minerality. But make no mistake about it, this is classic Barolo that is aged in large botti as well as speaking to its place of origin. The tannins are aggressive and wrap the palate and teeth, with the wine finishing dry. On day two, this wine truly shows its depth and elegance, gaining weight in the glass with striking red fruit flavors... the best is certainly yet to come. For IWM, and myself, this is easily one of the best values in traditionally-spirited, single vineyard Barolo from the 2016 vintage. A MUST BUY from this classic vintage.” 11/2020

“This is only the second vintage of this unique nectar that we have experienced, the first being the absolutely spellbinding 2012 release, and the wine is an 'experience wine' with a lot of history — in fact, 320 years of history, as the wine began in 1685, and became a favorite of Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Victoria, and Thomas Jefferson and thus the legend was born. But more importantly, what you should know about this wine in the glass is that this is a profound sweet wine that is more about freshness and refinement thanks to its proximity to the sea and granite soils. This wine that clocks in at just 14% alcohol and is not cloying or heavy. The Muscat provides lift and a stunning bouquet of flowers that transcends to the palate. There are incredible citrus nuances from orange blossoms, dried apricots, and lemon zest to lemon wafers, all complemented with some brown spices. With aeration the wine does gain in texture, but always remains light on its feet. This wine makes you stop and stare and say, 'Remind why I do not drink sweet wines again.' There truly is nothing like seeing someone experience Château d’ Yquem or Quintarelli for the first time, and certainly Vin de Constance deserves a place there as well.” more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Tasting this wine with the IWM Team, we all exchanged raised eyebrows, and the first statement that came out was, how can this be ten years old?  This is absolutely a game changing expression that will make you rethink Albarino as you know it.  It is one of those unique wines that offers a yin and yang experience, with texture and tension.  Certainly, those that appreciate Francois Cotat Sancerre, Von Winning Riesling, and dare I say, Raveneau Chablis, will find solace with this standout expression. The wine begins retrained and showing its clean, Green Spain personality, with notes of salty apple, lime, grapefruit component, sea spray, and herbs. With aeration, the wine gains weight and nuances of lycee, honeysuckle, and a touch of mango. A unique Albarino with more complexity that more need to experience.  Easily one of the most youthful old wines we have experienced.” more info

The wines of the late Prince Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi created a phenomenon for their ability to age. However, to ensure that his legacy would not be misrepresented, Ludovisi destroyed his vineyards, passing his private cellar to Italian food and wine critic Luigi Veronelli and entrusting him to find individuals who could keep his vision alive. This mission continues today, as the vintage wines have been left to Sergio by the late Veronelli. more info
