Brigaldara Valpolicella Classico 2017 750ml
Rustic, elegant and food-friendly, this ’17 Valpolicella Classico explodes from the glass with a shower of dark fruits, bright cherries, warm leather, violet petals, and spicy cigar wrapper. This detailed wine unfolds on the palate to reveal a seamless balance of sweet fruits, chewy tannins, and electric acidity--it’s a juicy delight that calls for meals of hard cheeses, grilled meats, tomato-based pastas, or pizza! A blend of 55% Corvinone, 25% Corvina, and 20%, Rondinella deriving from vines planted in the 1970s and 1980s, the wine ferments and ages in temperature-controlled stainless steel.
Nicolis Valpolicella Classico 2014 750ml
Seductive scents of cherries and berries dance with eucalyptus, anise, black tea, cigar wrapper, and spice--this structured yet succulent Valpolicella practically grabs you by the ears and pulls you to the glass! Dark, juicy fruit mingles with earthy, smoky notes on the palate, where they’re joined by bitter almond and a hint of burned sugar, conveyed in a velvety palate that’s spiked with piquant acidity. A blend of 65% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, and the remainder Molinara, this wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel and ages in large barrels for a classic interpretation of Veneto terroir and traditional winemaking.
Begali Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2014 750ml
Fresh, complex, delicious and immediately enjoyable, this ’14 Valpolicella Ripasso layers its sweet red fruits with warm leather, loam, spices, espresso and a kiss of raisined fruits. Elegant and round, this artisanal wine is nonetheless vibrant; it’s a terrific exploration into its vintage and a great introduction to the family-run Begali estate. A Valpolicella Ripasso “passes” through the lees left from the estate’s Amarone, and this one from Begali (a blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and the remainder other indigenous grapes) spends at least a year maturing in oak barrel, followed by time in the bottle before release.
Brigaldara Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore 2016 750ml
Lush red and brooding blue fruits mingle with melted chocolate, spice box, violet petals, vanilla and soil in Brigaldara’s delicious, bold ’16 Valpolicella Ripasso. The product of protocol that lets the fermenting Valpolicella juice “pass through” the estate’s Amarone grape must, this wine is surprisingly complex and elegant, layering its intense fruits with fine-grained, polished tannins and vibrant acidity--it’s a food-friendly beauty! A blend of 40% Corvina, 30% Corvinone 20% Rondinella and 10% other grape varietals, grapes ferment first in stainless steel vats, and then with the skins of the Amarone grapes for five days; then the wine ages in oak barrels.
Nicolis Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2012 750ml
Lush red and brambly blue fruits dance on a foundation of underbrush, peppery spices, warm tobacco, raspberry jam and touches of potpourri, cocoa and Christmas cake in this elegant, intense ’12 Amarone. As full bodied as this Amarone is, it feels supple and energetic, powering to a lingering finish marked by chewy tannins, umami undertones, and bold fruit. While you could enjoy this wine upon release, a few years in the cellar will mellow its component parts into a delicious, cohesive whole. A blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Croatina, grapes dry in small cases for three months before pressing and a slow fermentation period at low temperatures; and the wine ages for 30 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks, followed by eight months in bottle before release.
Begali Recioto della Valpolicella Classico 2011 500ml
A frankly voluptuous wine, this opulent dessert wine uses partially dried grapes, just as an Amarone does, to achieve its intense, palate-staining full body, but unlike an Amarone, it’s approachable early and it’s sweet. Dark and seductive, Begali Recioto della Valpolicella Classico offers a bounty of juicy plums, brambly blackberries and sweet figs, all laid upon an herbal-inflected bed of cinnamon, star anise and sandalwood. Velvety and rich, yet spiked with tongue-piquing acidity, this luxurious wine is made for slow sipping, accompanied by cheese, chocolate or pastry. A blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and the remainder other indigenous grapes, this wine spends a year in barrel, followed by at least six months in bottle before release.
Giuseppe Quintarelli Primofiore 2012 750ml
A ripe, low-production vintage in the Veneto, 2012 gave the Quintarelli estate limited but very healthy berries for its wines; this expressive, satisfying, weighty and accessible Primofiore embodies the velvetiness and opulence of the year. Juicy, succulent red and black fruits dance with notes of cola, cigar wrapper, spice, dried rose petals, and fruit compote in this elegant, rich wine. Full-bodied and voluptuous, the estate’s Primofiore is a blend of 50% Corvina, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc, which all finish ripening in wooden boxes before fermentation and aging in Slovenian oak. Primofiore, which means “first press,” gets the runoff juice of the first-run Amarone, adding depth and complexity. The rich ’12 Primofiore allows enthusiasts a first taste of this banner vintage.
Giuseppe Quintarelli Primofiore 2014 750ml
Tart red and succulent blue fruits cavort with savory herbs, sun-warmed loam, pressed wildflowers, and touches of leather, graphite and spice in this restrained, elegant ’14 Primofiore bottling. Crisp and delineated, this muscular wine studs the cheeks with chewy tannins and reveals a sturdy mineral core; a licorice and earth accented finish completes the drinking experience. Primofiore is a blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc that come from a 27-acre limestone and basalt vineyard of thirty-year-old vines, and the estate partially dries its Cabernet grapes for added intensity and texture. Primofiore, which means "first flower," is a terrific introduction to the estate style, wedding complexity with an easy-drinking profile.
Giuseppe Quintarelli Primofiore 2013 750ml
Peppery spices, tarry earth, crushed wildflowers, truffles and wet river rocks frame the succulent red and black fruits in the delicious ’13 Primofiore. Complex enough to be interesting yet uncomplicated and easy drinking, this wine glides across the palate with a silky, electric feel--it’s a sheer delight. Primofiore is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; the Cabernet Sauvignon is partially dried to intensify the wine’s flavor profile and its texture. Primofiore, which means “first flower,” is the easily accessible Quintarelli red, and a delicious wine that consistently over-delivers at its price point.
