Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso 2018 750ml
In Stock
Price: $24.99
Special Price: $19.99
“The 2018s provide a lighter and friendlier interpretation – a departure from the more austere expressions of the torrid and challenging 2017 vintage. The Etna Rosso here is a blend from Terre Nere’s top vineyards, and right from the pull of the cork the aromatics scream Italy with explosive red fruit, punch, minerality and wild herbs. On the palate it is a mouthful dripping with wild berries, cranberry, candied fruit, a touch of plum, citrus, and spice with a dry, tannic Nebbiolo-like finish. It is here that with you really experience the influence of the volcanic soil with additional nuances of smoke and tar that marry together with herbaceous undertones. The wine does benefit with aeration. This is Nerello Mascalese (95%) and Nerello Cappuccio (5%) that will transport you to Southern Italy begging for pizza with fatty pork sausage. Huge value-driven crowd pleaser.”
Carlo Giacosa Barbaresco Narin 2016 750ml
In Stock
Price: $47.99
Special Price: $39.99
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Twenty years in the business and I can say I simply forgot about the wines of Carlo Giacosa. I knew of them in the early days, but was quick to disregard, thinking how can anyone live up to the name Giacosa? Well, Carlo Giacosa does it with value and tradition with these two prized selections – Narin and Montefico, and they are not to be missed. The wines capture the classic 2016 vintage brilliantly. While the rest of the IWM team slightly favored the cru Montefico expression, as it had more a little more depth and structure, showcasing a more savory side, I loved the more feminine Barbaresco Narin for its approachability on the palate and in the pocket. I mean this is an all-star cuvée consisting of fruit from the prized crus of Asili, Montefico, and Ovello. It delivers what a more traditional cuvée should, and that is more balance and harmony in its youth than the sibling cru expression. This is a rich and chewy Barbaresco and you can expect to find nuances of wild berries, dried flowers, orange rind, licorice, cinnamon, herbs, and baked earth. It is a Barbaresco that will appeal to the fans of both Nebbiolo and Sangiovese and it is deceivingly approachable today. Unfortunately, just 400 cases are produced with a handful arriving in the US. It is simply great value for a Barbaresco with pedigree you will not need to wait forever on.”
Carlo Giacosa Barbaresco Vigna Montefico 2016 750ml
In Stock
Price: $54.99
Special Price: $47.99
If you appreciate Barbaresco and Barolo, then the symbolic and patriarchic name of Bruno Giacosa is not new to you. However, the producer we are talking about today is the smaller, more artisanal Carlo Giacosa. Aside from iconic last name, they do share three important things in common, and that is (1) prized grand cru like vineyard holdings in Barbaresco (Montefico, Asili, Ovello and Cole), (2) Dante Scaglione – the esteemed consulting enologist that assisted Bruno Giacosa in making some of his most legendary Barolo and Barbaresco, and (3) a traditional expression of the noble Nebbiolo. What may surprise you even further is that this is not a new estate, there is a long history here. Carlo’s father, Donato, was among the few growers that founded the Produttori del Barbaresco in 1958 under the guidance of the priest of Barbaresco. Carlo himself grew up alongside Angelo Gaja as Donato performed a lot of vineyard work for the GAJA family. Then, in the mid-sixties, Donato and the family went out on their own bottling their own wines and have remained under the radar in the US. Until now that is, with Dante Scaglione on board over the past few years, this is a historic rising star to watch.
Carlo Giacosa is small, farming just five hectares, yielding a mere 3,000 cases a year of traditionally driven Barbaresco. They practice organic, producing wines from long macerations and aging in large casks. More importantly, they count some of Barbaresco’s most famous crus as their own. There is the structured single vineyard Barbaresco Vigna Montefico, which is sourced from the eponymous cru.
2015 Produttori di Carema Carema Riserva Selezione 60th Anniversary 750ml
In Stock
Price: $69.99
Special Price: $49.99
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “[Tasted over 72 hours]. Twenty years ago, when IWM started carrying the wines of Alto Piemonte, we always recommended looking at the wines from this cool region in a warm, ripe vintage. The added fruit provides the body needed to match the vibrant acidity of these wild, mountain wines. Well, in 2015, that is exactly what we have, and it is the perfect vintage to mark the 60th Anniversary of this special and small cooperative. In fact, this is soft and inviting Nebbiolo, marked by sweet and succulent red fruit and nuances that cover much of the flavor spectrum. The nose will transport you to Piemonte and on the palate you can expect notes of wild strawberries, sour cherries, cranberry, citrus, potpourri, brown spice, tobacco leaf, leather, and forest floor. This is an elegant, and old fashioned Nebbiolo expression – the perfect wine for the thirsty traveler. Best of all, this is a wine that can be enjoyed today, especially with a two hour decant. Highly recommend.”

2016 Poderi Colla Barbaresco Roncaglie
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Like the Cigliuti, this is a little and serious Barbaresco that would make Sergio proud. It is another one of those small family run wineries in Piemonte that somehow remains under the radar, despite being guided by one of the regions founding fathers - which is fine by us. The traditionally-spirited Poderi Colla Roncaglie is an expression that will outlive many Barolo from this historic vintage in the making for Piedmont. The wine simply screams freshness and purity of fruit and is one of those wines that pulls you in by the nose hairs with the signature nuances of dried rose petals, tar and red fruit. These flavors are joined on the palate with cherries, citrus, spice, cedar, herbs, and minerals. This Barbaresco is classically built and rustic, expect to find tannic grip that wraps the teeth and packs a punch on the finish. The wine needs a little time to reveal itself and demands some food. In fact, the best results for this wine came after being open for 24 hours. This is for those that like classic Nebbiolo delivered with exceptional value. Kudos to Tina and Beppe Colla for this gem.” 8/2020

Berta Elisi Grappa NV 750ml
In Stock
Price:
$119.00
Clean, warming, and intense, the Elisi Grappa wafts with scents of chocolate-wrapped cherry, orchard fruits, caramel, toasted nuts and a kiss of spice. This Grappa feels silky and rich in the mouth, suffusing the palate with flavor notes, elegant alcohol, and just a touch of sweetness--it’s a finely balanced liqueur that caps a delicious dinner with deft balance and perfect heat. Crafting the non-vintage Elisi is a two-step process; first, Berta distills the component grape pomaces in copper pots and ages the component wines in oak, and then the distillery assembles a blend of 50% five-year-old Barbera grappa with 25% each eight-year-old Nebbiolo Grappa and three-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon Grappa; after the blend has been composed, the Elisi Grappa ages for a year in oak.
La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano 2016 750ml
In Stock
Price: $139.00
Special Price: $119.99
Wild, brambly black cherries, crisp currants, and a kiss of blood orange dance with fresh loam, crushed herbs, pencil lead, baking spices and potpourri in the massive, intense ’16 Barbaresco Valeirano. Showing Barbaresco’s mesmerizing sauvage side, this wine fills the mouth with chewy, dense tannins, fine ripe fruits, penetrating acidity, and a sneaky minerality that lingers on the finish. Cellar for a few years and then enjoy for decades. This wine derives from 45 to 50-year-old Nebbiolo vines grown in the estate’s 7.41-acre Valeirano vineyard, a south-facing plot with calcareous rocky soil. After handpicking, the grapes ferment for about a week in temperature-controlled vats, and then age first in new oak barrique for 20 to 22 months, then stainless steel for three months, followed by a year in bottle before release.
