Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Delizioso – it is once again the perfect word to sum up this transporting giant. One sniff and it does send you to Tuscany in first class. It’s is one of the more serious Rosso di Montalcino with fruit from the Canalicchio cru, as well as a percentage from the grand cru vineyard of Montosoli.  In tasting this wine in a line-up of some of our favorite Rosso di Montalcino, we can say firsthand this is a wine that captures the generosity of the vintage. Whereas the neighboring 2019 Le Potazzine captured a more high-toned and feminine expression, this is simply a more expansive Rosso, with a mouthful of generous fruit, but with supporting tannins and acidity that jump out with a little airtime. It simply has texture with freshness, and you can expect nuances of black cherries, plums, herbs and minerality. Let this wine breathe an hour and you will find more depth to this little Rosso that stains the palate for a persistent and long saline finish. It is another highly recommended house wine from IWM that will send you to Tuscany with each meal.” more info

Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2017 750ml
In Stock
Price: $39.99

2017 saw a challenging vintage in Montalcino, but you’d never know it from Canalicchio di Sopra’s radiant, layered ’17 Rosso di Montalcino. Super-ripe berries and tart cherries dance with underbrush, smoky minerals, new leather, crushed wildflowers, and touches of herbs, dusty spices and blood orange zest in this captivating wine. Silky tannins meld with the wine’s brisk acidity and both linger on the wine’s food-friendly finish. This ’17 Rosso offers an open-knit, silky invitation to early drinking, yet you’ll be able to drink it over the medium term. Deriving primarily from fruit grown on the estate’s youngest vines, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about two weeks; the wine ages for a year in a combination of oak vats and barriques. more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “How do you challenge what was accomplished in the ripe vintage of 2015? How about the classic 2016. It is a new chapter at this fabled Montalcino address, and it is one to watch. Diego Molinari is no longer seeing the operations, but the privileged vineyard site and historic estate is in good hands. And in 2016, the wine captures the structure of the more classic vintage. In fact, the wine begins big and explosive, but with marked acidity. With aeration, and time, the wine settles and integrates showcasing an almost creamy texture of rich fruit but balanced by some underlying precision. You can expect to find nuances of red and black fruit here highlighted by dark cherries, wild berries, plums, herbs, baked earth, and minerality. I know everyone is focused on the 2016 Brunello, but this get us excited about Rosso again, just as the Salvioni Rosso did in 2018. This is a true, grand cru-like Baby Brunello from the cult producer Cerbaiona and their prized vineyards from the benchmark vintage in the making. We receive a mere 54 bottles.” more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “I know everyone is focused on the ripe 2015s, but this get me excited about 2018, just as the Valdicava Rosso did. This is a true, grand cru-like Baby Brunello from the cult producer Salvioni and prized vineyards at La Cerbaiola. Just two casks are produced in select vintages, and it is a rarity that overdelivers. What we appreciate best about the wine is the approachability. Like the older sibling Brunello, it has a nose that simply grabs you by the nostrils and pulls you in. The purity and concentration of fruit is simply awesome and that is the benefit of the lesser aging, as there is freshness with elegance. Red fruit galore, red cherries, wild berries, crushed flowers, herbs and exotic spices. The finish does lets you know we are in Montalcino with drying tannins making their presence known. Hard not to drink this bottle quick, it is that delicious.” more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “There is just a lot going on here; it is the vaunted 2015 vintage, it is the final harvest under the watch of the legendary Diego Molinari, and it is a bottling that contains all the Brunello fruit.  It’s a mouthful and a lot to digest – but more importantly it is an awesome Rosso, I mean Brunello, I mean Rosso di Montalcino (wink, wink) Regardless of what you want to call it, this is classic Sangiovese produced from the prized stretch of Montalcino vineyards from an important vintage.  While it is a warm year, what we loved about this wine was the tension and acidity that came with the purity of fruit - simply awesome, and the wine benefits with some lesser aging here, as there is freshness with elegance. Expect to find red fruit galore, red cherries, wild berries, crushed flowers, herbs and exotic spices. This is a high-toned 2015 expression and a special bottle, as it does contain the final harvest from our beloved Diego Molinari.” more info

Bursting with crisp red and succulent blue fruits, Biondi-Santi’s ’16 Rosso tempts from the first whiff; secondary notes of violet petals, warm baking spices, savory herbs, fresh loam and a touch of chocolate counterbalance the wine’s enticing fruits. Fresh yet lush, firm yet open-knit, loaded with sweet fruits held on earthy underpinnings, this ’16 Rosso embraces its tensions. Fine-grained, sturdy tannins, vivid acidity, and luscious dry extract weld seamlessly to create a “baby Brunello” that’s enjoyable now or over the next decade. Deriving from Il Greppo’s younger vines, grapes undergo a temperature-controlled fermentation, and the wine ages for a year in oak casks, followed by four months in bottle before release. more info
