A Valpolicella Ripasso “passes” through the lees left from the estate’s Amarone, and this one from Begali (a blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and the remainder other indigenous grapes) spends at least a year maturing in oak barrel, followed by time in the bottle before release.

Offering notes of espresso, black cherry, earth, exotic spices and chocolate, this ’11 Valpolicella makes a strong contender for one of IWM’s favorite wines at its price point. This lush Valpolicella gets its extra oomph for being made with the ripasso method, where the wine re-ferments with the skins of the grapes used for Nicolis’ Amarone and Recioto wines, adding extract, color, flavor, density, and a touch of alcohol. Aged in botti for 16 months before being bottled, this wine is a perfect accompaniment to hearty fall and winter fare.

A blend of 40% Corvina, 30% Corvinone 20% Rondinella and 10% other grape varietals, grapes ferment first in stainless steel vats, and then with the skins of the Amarone grapes for five days; then the wine ages in oak barrels.
