The Ornellaia Collection, a Six Bottle Sampler! And Two Great Go-To Reds for Fall!
September 11, 2017
A Note from Sergio

A big estate whose size matches its fame, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a fascinating place. Though founded by Ludovico Antinori, Ornellaia has been owned by Frescobaldi family for more than a decade, and though it sprawls across about 220 acres, every bit of it looks as if it was tended to just minutes ago. The vineyards grow in neat, orderly rows, punctuated by dots of flowers blooming. Depending on the season, you'll see tulips, roses, irises and other flowers in bloom. Attention to detail is paramount at Ornellaia, but a warm, human heart and a soaring spirit are just as important. You see it in the trellises of flowers that spell out "Ornellaia" in five-foot-high letters, and you see it in the art that lines the walls. Of course, you taste it in the estate's delicious wines, whether the flagship Ornellaia or the entry-level Le Volte.

Today, I'm delighted to present the Ornellaia Collection, a six-bottle sampler that includes a four-vintage mini-vertical of the flagship Super Tuscan, plus a bottle each of the estate's Le Serre Nuove and its Le Volte. Axel Heinz, the chief winemaker at Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, tinkers with the compositions of the estate's wines every vintage in order to wrest the best from the growing year. This means that every bottling will be as individual, as beautiful, and as authentic as the estate that made it, and it also means that if you love Ornellaia's wines (as many of you rightly do) you will always have something new to discover and to enjoy. You can buy these six wines individually, of course, but the half-case sampler is a tasty embodiment of Ornellaia's many wonders.

Along with the Ornellaia Collection, I'm very happy to offer a pair of affordable, artisanal and, above all, yummy reds: Tormaresca 2012 Trentangeli Rosso, from the Antinori family's estate in Puglia, and Nicolis 2014 Valpolicella Classico, from one of IWM's favorite family-owned small estates located in the Veneto. To Italians, wine is as essential as food. It's not a luxury item; it's a necessity. This pair of Italian reds is under $25, and each of these wines is special in its own right. You can pour these wines with your Tuesday night pasta--or you can surprise your dinner party guests! These red wines are both scrumptious, wallet-friendly, and indispensible for fall's cold-weather meals.

Enjoy!

Ornellaia Ornellaia 2014 750ml
Price: $229.00

Precise and delineated, the ’14 Ornellaia wafts from the glass with a symphony of crystalline notes: brambly berries, juicy cherries, licorice, warm earth, sweet herbs, smoke and crushed minerals, to name but a few. This wine embraces its opposites, marrying chewy tannins with a subtle sweet inner perfume, and complementing its rich dry extract with vivid acidity. Immensely expressive yet perfectly nuanced, this is a detailed, sophisticated bottling that has the structure to age for years--and given its demanding vintage, the ’14 Ornellaia is a triumph! In 2014, Ornellaia is a blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, and 14% Cabernet Franc; the product of a challenging yet ultimately rewarding year, ’14 Ornellaia gained the name “Essence” for the transparent transmission of its terroir. Tenuta dell'Ornellaia vinfies each component grape and vineyard parcel separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel and ages the wines in barriques (70% new) for 12 months; then the components are blended and aged in barriques for six months before bottling and aging for another year. more info
