New Arrival. Rising Star of the Tuscan Coast, with Ornellaia and Matarocchio Pedigree, Delivers in the Classic 2016 Vintage. Discover Why This is the Best Value in Super Tuscans - You May Not Know.
“Lodovico Antinori continues to step up his game. The entry-level Pino di Biserno is one of the best Maremma reds readers will find in its price range. Readers who enjoy the intense aromatics and structure of Maremma Cabernet Franc will find these wines particularly appealing.” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous
What would happen if we combined the Bolgheri icons of Ornellaia with (Guado al Tasso) Matarocchio and made it available at a fraction of the price? Well, we have an idea of what it might look like, and it begins with the Tenuta Biserno Il Pino. This quote up above from Antonio Galloni is absolutely spot on and perfectly sums up our feelings on the relatively new project from Lodivico Antinori (Ornellaia, Masseto) and his brother Piero Antinori (Solaia, Tignanello, Guado al Tasso).
Tenuta Biserno truly is the little giant and rising star from the upper Maremma in the hills of Bibbona alongside the neighboring hamlet of Bolgheri. The estate has come a long way since we hosted Lodivico for the inaugural US release of his wines more than ten years ago in our vintage tasting room right here in New York. We could not be more excited about the estate, as the wines just keep getting better and better, and with the classic vintage of 2016 this is easily the pinnacle Il Pino expression to date! With its sundrenched and juicy cuvée containing of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot along with fine, silky tannins, we revisited this instant crowd pleaser ourselves one last time. In a few simple words, this is awesome juice in 2016, and we strongly agree with Galloni's statement, “I especially admire the way it pulses with energy and tension.”
Having been inspired by the response to this crowd-pleasing Super Tuscan at several tastings and events, it is a warming red that we believe everyone should have on hand going into the upcoming seasons and today we are making the wine available at the best price in the country. This is a wine that commands $75 elsewhere, yet for a limited time only we are offering the wine at just $47.99. To put this in perspective, Tuscany’s pioneering estates typically command between $125 to $400 per bottle, while the 2016 Il Pino is a fraction of the price.
A final allocation has just arrived into New York and can start shipping out late next week - just in time for the cool shipping weather season. You will not find a better value in Super Tuscans of this unique pedigree. Lock in your bottle(s) now, we do not expect the wine to last with this special pricing that is the best in the country.
ADDITIONAL NOTES AND REVIEWS:
"Biserno is unique - a dream for any winemaker. Reuniting the names Lodovico and Piero, the namesakes of the original founders of the Antinori Company, I am happy and honored to realize my last winemaking project." -Lodovico Antinori
2016 TENUTA DI BISERNO TOSCANA IL PINO DI BISERNO
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: "We are not done with the 2016 vintage yet – and this is one of the great relative values in the Super Tuscan category that should not be missed. The wine boasts some serious pedigree with the involvement of Lodivico Antinori (Ornellaia and Masseto) and Piero Antinori (Tignanello, Solaia, Matarocchio). In fact, not too far up the hilly and winding roads of both Ornellaia and Guado al Tasso, is Tenuta di Biserno. And of the wines in this Antinori portfolio it is the Il Pino that we love for best due to its value, as well as, immediate gratification. It is Saint Emilion with a Mediterranean flare - this is an explosive and rich expression, backed with energy and depth from the 2016 vintage. A powerful blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, you can expect to find black cherries, wild berries, kirsch, black licorice, crushed lavender and violets, grilled herbs, tar, and baked earth. Warm and exotic with just enough minerality and acidity to keep it balanced. Pop and pour and serve at cellar temperature - this is an instant crowd pleaser.”
94+ Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2016 Il Pino di Biserno is powerful, if rather somber. Dark fruit, scorched earth, graphite, leather, tobacco and torrefaction add to an impression of depth and gravitas. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it needs at least a few years in bottle to shed some of its formidable tannic heft. Even today, though, the 2016 is impressive. I especially admire the way it pulses with energy and tension." 3/19
