Just Arrived and Ready to Ship. The Prized 2013 Brunello Riserva with the Antinori Touch of Elegance Over Power. Released Just Six Times. Plus More from the “Fairytale Vintage.”
“Two thousand thirteen is an excellent vintage for Brunello di Montalcino…it is undoubtedly one of the better years for Brunello in some time – along with 2010, 2001, 2006 and 2004 in that order.” -Vinous Media
We've said it numerous times over the past month: the best way to sum up many of the Brunello di Montalcino releases from the ripe 2015 vintage is one word — delizioso. Yes, the vintage has been dubbed a “fairytale vintage” by the media and has entered the pantheon of legendary ripe years such as 1997, 2007 and even 2010. However, before the ripe and robust vintage of 2015, there was the more classic year of 2013 for those of us who still like to talk about 2006 and 2004. And today we would like to draw your attention to an expression that has captivated us once again, from an IWM signature producer, Pian delle Vigne. The estate continues to show how the Antinori touch and excellence in Toscana extends beyond the borders of Chianti Classico (Vigna Tignanello - Solaia) and Bolgheri (Guado al Tasso) and into the center of Montalcino. The riper and fuller fruit from lower altitudes alongside moderate maceration provide Antinori's signature style of elegance over power, while maintaining the integrity of Brunello and the Montalcino terroir.
And while we are including the straight 2015 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino, we would like to draw your attention to the newly arrived 2013 Pian delle Vigne Brunello Riserva Vignaferrovia. As many of us know, Brunello Riserva is a small category to begin with - the wines are crafted in only the finest vintages and selected for their premium stature from winery to winery, whether it's the best lots or singular vineyard sites. The 2013s are an important set of wines, and as opposed to the large-scale Normale offerings, the Riservas are coming in small lots and selling nearly as quickly as we receive availability.
What you should know is that only a handful of merchants receive an allocation of this prized Riserva, and it has only been released six times since its inception with the 2004 vintage. The Vignaferrovia is only produced in the finest vintages from the grapes of a small four-hectare parcel in the vineyard adjacent to the 19th century railway station on the estate. The soil is principally calcareous clay that is rich in small stones. The wine is elegant and captivating, characterized by well-integrated tannins and structure complemented by freshness and sweetness.
These are among the great modern-day vintages of Montalcino, and as you may know by now, we simply cannot get enough Brunello from the likes of Caprili, Sassetti, Salvioni, Soldera, Canalicchio di Sopra, and this IWM original - the Pian delle Vigne Brunello and their prized Riserva, Vignaferrovia. Both wines are being presented with some of the best pricing in the country for this limited time.

*2013 has arrived and is ready to ship, the 2015 is pre-arrival.
The fruit of Antinori’s venture in Montalcino, this Brunello has, since its inaugural 1995 bottling, grown a devoted international fan-base for its structure, aromatics and elegance--as well as Antinori’s hallmark accessibility. Pian delle Vigne sits south of the medieval soap-colored town, near the Orcia River Valley. Just over 470 acres in total, Pian delle Vigne rests at between 430 and 825 feet above sea level and has more than 160 acres planted to vine. Named for its vineyard of provenance, Pian delle Vigne’s vineyards, whose stony soils are a mix of clay and limestone, receive southwest exposure. The estate uses an aggressive green harvest in order to restrict grape yields and to promote ripening of the very best Sangiovese grapes.
Additional Notes and Reviews:
2013 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino Vignaferrovia
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Screams Tuscany from the nose. The wine showcases Antinori’s signature touch of elegance over power, yet the demeanor of 2013 shows through. It is a Riserva from an austere year, so this is a wine best served with decanting, aeration, or further aging. However, with seven years of age and some time in the glass, this wine captivates with black cherry, licorice, black olive, mocha, tobacco leaf, sandalwood and a touch of smoke. It is a darker and richer expression, ideal for the upcoming season."
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “This wine reaches into the deep end of the Brunello intensity spectrum. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Pian delle Vigne Vignaferrovia is a compact and robust expression of Sangiovese that presents a thick core of dark fruit followed by savory tones of tobacco, spice and cured leather. You might mistakenly conclude that this vintage offers a more international interpretation of Montalcino (with 30 months of oak aging), but I don't necessarily believe this to be the case. The wine is instead accurately reflective of Sangiovese with more textural richness, sunshine and structure locked within. This Riserva embodies a sense of place more than it does winemaking style.”

Vinous Media: "The nose shows an alluring display of hauntingly dark florals giving way to crushed black cherry, plums, and tobacco, with hints of spiced citrus and undergrowth adding further depths. On the palate, silky textures flood the senses with ripe red and black fruits, carried by vibrant acids, as sweet spices and minerals slowly saturate, and fine tannin begins to mount toward the finale. The finish is long and structured, resonating on zesty wild berry fruits, spice, and minerals; yet its tannic heft keeps it all in check. The 2015 Pian delle Vigne is one of the few wines of the vintage that requires some time in the cellar, and with this balance of primary fruits, acids, and structure, it should emerge as something to behold.”
