21 Biondi-Santi Wines, All at Special Pricing!
September 18, 2018
A Note from Sergio

When the late, great Franco Biondi-Santi started making Brunello at his family's Il Greppo estate just after the end of WWII, Montalcino sported fewer than 160 acres planted to Sangiovese Grosso spread among the wine's 10 or so producers. By the year 2000, there were almost 5,000 acres and more than 200 winemakers (and there's even more now, not quite two decades later). Consider that Brunello was created a little less than 140 years ago, and you can see that Brunello hasn't just grown--it has exploded! Americans buy more than a quarter of all Brunello produced, so this explosion owes much to the excellent taste of people like you.

A wine as timeless as Brunello would seem to have always been here, but that's not the case. Franco's great-grandfather, Clemente Santi, may have founded the estate, but Franco's grandfather, Ferruccio, isolated the BBS 11 clone of the Sangiovese Grape. As Clemente had done before him, Ferruccio aimed to make a long-aging wine of tremendous nuance, structure and finesse. He called that wine "Brunello di Montalcino." Ferruccio's son, Tancredi, was not only a talented winemaker--he was a visionary wine marketer, and his efforts brought Brunello to the attention of the wine world. Franco learned from his father, both how to make great wine and how to draw attention to it. Without his passion and drive, Montalcino might still be a dusty town, or Brunello might have lost its austerity, polish and class.

Today, I'm very proud to present special pricing on 21 Biondi-Santi wines, both old and new vintages, and both the estate's Brunello and its Rosso di Montalcino. Some of today's wines it on connoisseurs' "bucket lists," while others are less critically celebrated but nonetheless beautiful. Whether a Brunello Annata, Brunello Riserva, or Rosso di Montalcino, each of these Biondi-Santi wines is an opportunity to experience Sangiovese Grosso as it was meant to be: age-worthy, aristocratic, fine-boned and utterly beautiful. Finally, each of these bottles is a mystical experience in its own right, a way to forge bonds with the people with whom you share it. Wine brings people together, and these Il Greppo wines are unforgettable.

Enjoy!

Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Rosso di Montalcino 2015 750ml
Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Rosso di Montalcino 2015 750ml
Price: $89.00
Currently Unavailable.

The product of a fussy, low-production and high-quality vintage, Biondi-Santi’s expressive ’15 Rosso di Montalcino gleams with purity. Crisp red berries and sweet blue berries layer with mentholated herbs, new saddle leather, pressed rose petals, and touches of underbrush, spice and vanilla. A sweet inner perfume and subtle minerality provide lift to the palate, while a sturdy core of acidity propels the wine to a complex, savory finish. Crafted from younger vines, this wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation followed by two years in oak casks and four months in bottle before release. Il Greppo won’t be releasing its 2013 Brunello Annata until 2019, which will rest for an additional year of aging, a decision that makes this ’15 Rosso di Montalcino the estate’s only new release until that time. more info

Price: $139.00

A year that Franco Biondi-Santi pronounced “exceptional,” 2008 provided for a Brunello wafting with scents of juicy cherries, crushed flower petals, licorice, cigar wrapper, forest floor, and earth; these notes of berries and briar reappear on the palate, where they’re joined by spice, earth and smoke. More accessible than the typical Biondi-Santi Brunello, the ’08 Brunello shows its aristocratic breeding in its marriage of succulent fruit and nervy acidity; this wine unfurls on the palate with silky, fine-grained tannins, revealing its myriad layers with time in the glass. Biondi-Santi crafts its "Annata," or normale bottlings, from fruit grown on vines between 10-25 years old in marl soil. Vinified in temperature-controlled cement tanks and aged in Slovenian oak casks, Biondi-Santi Brunello is extraordinarily age-worthy, balanced and beautiful, akin to Brunello's answer to Burgundy. The classic, aromatic, pure and aristocratic 2008 Brunello is entering its drinking window. more info

A benchmark vintage from a landmark estate: you can’t go wrong with Brunello from Biondi-Santi, and in 2010, this wine is breathtaking. Pure, precise red fruit wafts with crushed rose and violet petals, fresh-cut herbs, river rocks, warm cigar wrapper, licorice and baking spices in this austere, aristocratic Brunello from Biondi-Santi. Taut and linear, this 2010 is textbook Biondi-Santi Brunello, rolling across the palate to release a captivating, a complex inner perfume, chewy fine-grained tannins, and a soaring structure. Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 2004 750ml
Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 2004 750ml
Price: $225.00

Intensely aromatic, ethereal, delineated, silky and refined, this ’04 Annata Brunello is very much the type that the late, great Franco Biondi-Santi himself favored. Biondi-Santi’s Brunello Annata, or normale bottling, undergoes fermentation in traditional Slavonian oak for 18 days, followed by aging in large oak casks of 800 to 7,000 liters for a period of two to three years, setting the standard for traditional Brunello. The estate called 2004 an “exceptional” vintage, and now with a decade of maturity, this balanced ’04 Biondi-Santi Brunello is coming into its own, offering a touch of tertiary development to its core of sweet red fruit, dried rose petals, earth and telltale Montalcino terroir. more info

Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 1995 750ml
Price: $239.00

Now with two decades of maturity, this benchmark Brunello is just entering its drinking window. This is a wine that defies time, growing better, mellower, more nuanced and more meditative with each passing year--even as it retains its vibrancy and its fresh Montalcino fruit. Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino is the standard for the wine--which only makes sense since the wine originated at this estate more than 130 years ago. more info

Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 1997 750ml
Price: $279.00

Upon release, Biondi-Santi’s ’97 Brunello radiated purity and elegance, but its massive tannins required extensive aging before true approachability--two decades later, this silky, nuanced wine is firing on all cylinders. Juicy red and blue fruits dance against a backdrop of balsamic herbs, warm cigar wrapper, worn leather, white truffles, dried violet petals, and touches of smoky minerals. Ethereal in the mouth, a sturdy acidic core powers this Brunello as it glides on the palate; fine-grained tannins stud the finish that resonates and lingers. Known for its nose and intense age-worthiness, a Biondi-Santi Brunello's trademark aromatics and acidity are attributable to the vineyard's altitude that ranges between 1,300-1,600 feet above sea level. Biondi-Santi's Brunello Annata, or normale bottling, undergoes fermentation in traditional Slavonian oak for about 18 days, followed by aging in large oak casks of 800 to 7,000 liters for a period of two to three years, setting the standard for traditional Brunello. more info
