New Allocation: The SOLD OUT “Baby Sassicaia” and Lucky Eights of Tenuta San Guido Returns. Italy’s #1 Super Tuscan Delivers Value with Sassicaia Pedigree at 1/4 the Price! Special - 48 Hours Only.
All this recent talk of Bordeaux has made Sergio, myself, and the IWM team thirsty for more Cabernet and Merlot blends — but this time from Tuscany! While all eyes remain on 2016 and the tiny hamlet of Bolgheri, the legendary birthplace of Super Tuscans, we are skipping ahead to 2018 for youthful wines that we can enjoy today. IWM believes that begins with the new allocation of the “baby Sassicaia,” the 2018 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto. That is right, on this 28th of September, we are celebrating the lucky "8s" of Sassicaia and the Tenuta San Guido estate with a new allocation of one of our favorite expressions of Guidalberto in twenty years! And for 48 hours only, we are presenting the wine at the special price of $43.88 - among the best in the country!
While the Super-Tuscan patriarch Sassicaia requires patience for the collector, Guidalberto offers approachability in the pocket and on the palate due to its youthful blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta has explained that he created Guidalberto for “two reasons: first of all, the desire to see what we could accomplish with Merlot, a grape that we had never used before; second, the desire to offer the consumer a wine which could be appreciated at a younger age compared to our veteran Sassicaia.”
The insider note is that 20% of the 2018 Guidalberto’s fruit is young-vine Sassicaia, truly making it one of the finest “Baby Sassicaia” bottlings to date. But the good news does not end there. If you follow Tenuta San Guido, then you know there is something special about the vintages ending in “8,” beginning with the inaugural 1968 and continuing through with the 1978, 1988, 1998, and 2008. These vintages offer more classic expressions from the house and are the preferred style of estate owner Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta and his family.
With the 2018 Guidalberto, you have a more classic “baby Sassicaia” delivered with approachability. What we appreciate here is the incredible value paired with a Sassicaia pedigree at one-quarter the price of the flagship! Thanks to a new buying opportunity we are able to share some additional savings with our loyal patrons and present the wine at some of the best pricing in the country. So if you are looking for a wine to share with guests or for the holidays, this is one wine to stock up on and enjoy.

ADDITIONAL NOTES AND REVIEWS:
2018 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto
Chris Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “WOW…what a wine! The nose alone transports you to the Bolgheri coastline, and the bouquet is among the most pronounced we have experienced in this wine. The slightly cooler and more classic 2018 vintage has presented a more aromatic and refined expression, and in contrast to the 2017s that offered more stewed fruit nuances, there is more Burgundian sensibility to the wine, which captures the classic Sassicaia style with its signature herbaceous and briny undertones. On the palate, there is explosive and generous fruit, yet the wine remains so light on its feet. It has the juiciness to be a crowd pleaser and the depth and precision that will keep wine collectors digging into the glass for more nuances. The beauty of this wine comes with an hour of aeration as it keeps evolving in the glass. Watch for the silky texture and energetic spine. Expect to find notes wild berries, cherries, currants, black olives, spice, herbs, tar, and salinity. If you like refined, and understated Super Tuscans of finesse, look no further. This is easily one of the finest, classic expressions in Guaidalberto’s twenty-year career."
Antonio Galloni, Vinous: “The 2018 Guidalberto, tasted from an approximate blend from barrel, is positively stellar. I can only hope that the bottled wine is as fresh, vibrant and nuanced as this sample. A rush of black cherry, plum, spice, leather and licorice graces the 2018 with striking depth and nuance. Light on its feet and deep, the 2018 has a lot to offer. In many years, Guidalberto can be a rather rich wine, but in 2018 it is very closely aligned with the house style.”
