Debuting 2009 Aldo Conterno and 2011 Emmanuel Rouget! Under $90 Vintage Sandrone!
September 30, 2013
A Note from Sergio

When I pass through the Langhe hills during autumn, I usually stop off in the village of La Morra just for its view. From this hilltop, you can see the patchwork quilt of land below--the fields of green and gold, the limestone soil, the trimmed vines, the trees shedding their red leaves. It's a quaint village, twisted cobblestone streets and stone building, and it's home to one of my favorite places to have a meal, Ristorante Belvedere, where I get a chance to eat classic Piemontese dishes: tartare di fassone con tartufo bianco d'Alba, ravioli del plin, brasato al Barolo. And, I usually drink the King of Wines, Barolo.

There's a perfect synchronicity between fall and Barolo, especially as the days grow shorter and the nights colder. I find myself gravitating toward wine that's substantial, glowing with the sun's warmth, stoking the fires of summer just a little longer and easing my way into the cold of winter.

Today, I'm proud to debut the 2009 Barolos of Aldo Conterno. This vintage was warm, but it was also fairly perfect for all its heat. Put this kind of ripe vintage in the hands of winemakers like those at Poderi Aldo Conterno, and you get wines with power, verve, and muscle. Aldo passed away a little over a year ago, and these wines show how, just as Aldo's dad trained him, he trained his sons. They're true to the estate and to the legacy of this great producer, and they evoke all the sunniness of the vintage while maintaining the muscular structure of a heavyweight boxer.

In addition to these great new Aldo Conterno releases, I'm delighted to shine a light on one special ten-year-old Barolo from Luciano Sandrone--and to offer it at under $90 a bottle! Finally, I'm very happy to debut the new releases from Emmanuel Rouget, a classic bunch of Burgundies from one of the region's winemaking royalty.

Enjoy the fall in all its many colors and in all its glory!
