Antinori's Lush, Lively, Long-Lived Aglianico, Tormaresca 2015 Bocca di Lupo
September 4, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Most people--even those who really know and love Italian wine--don't think "Puglia" when they walk into a wine store. Antinori is trying to change that. About two decades ago, the Antinori family bought some vineyards in Puglia, founded its Tormaresca estate, and started making wines from indigenous grapes, as well as a few choice international varietals. When Vito Palumbo, Tormaresca's brand ambassador, led a tasting here at IWM, he said of southern Italy, "It's known as the 'California of the South, because you have more than 500 miles of coastline, so the climate is close to California's." Vito grew up on Tormaresca's lands, and he knows Puglia's climate, its light, its breezes, its dirt, its grapes and its wines.

Puglia's climate makes a beautiful marriage of rich fruits and electric acidity, and Tormaresca's wines are affordable, tasty, undiscovered gems. Tormaresca's wines are perfect if you love both wilder California wines and food-friendly Italian wines--indeed, I'd say that Tormaresca's wines are so familiar yet so excitingly different that they'll make converts of California-wine-loving friends! Today, I'm excited to debut the new 2015 vintage of Tormaresca's Bocca di Lupo, a mono-varietal Aglianico wine. Usually Aglianico wines need a lot of time in the cellar before you can enjoy them, but not this Tormaresca bottling. It's a deeply enjoyable, thoroughly Italian wine that punches far above its $60 price point, and you're going to love it!

Finally, I managed to score a few more bottles of Emmanuel Rouget's tremendous 2011 Vosne Romanée Les Beaumonts--don't miss them! Enjoy!

Tormaresca Bocca di Lupo Castel del Monte 2015 750ml
Tormaresca Bocca di Lupo Castel del Monte 2015 750ml
Price: $59.99

Balsamic herbs, flinty soil, warm spices, potpourri and berry jam frame the pure, opulent red and blue fruits in the ’15 Bocca di Lupo. Balanced and beautiful, this wine’s firm tannins cling to the cheeks as elegant minerality and fresh acidity propel the wine’s resonant finish. After allowing the Aglianico grapes to ripen fully, Tormaresca vinifies them in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ferments in barrique for fifteen months and ages in the bottle for two years before release. While Aglianico frequently requires time in the cellar before enjoyment, this bottle from Antinori's Tormaresca allows for earlier approachability, yet it sacrifices nothing for longevity. more info
Emmanuel Rouget Vosne Romanee Les Beaumonts 2011 750ml
Emmanuel Rouget Vosne Romanee Les Beaumonts 2011 750ml
Price: $499.00

Bright red fruits dance with minerals, fresh-cut herbs, and baking spices in this ’11 Vosne-Romanée that strides the line between delicacy and power. This wine opens on the palate to reveal a seductive inner perfume of fruit and sun-warmed earth, and its fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks as it builds to a lovely, sustained finish. The Vosne Romanée Les Beaumonts come from a prime parcel located in Flagey where the vines average nearly fifty years with some as old as eighty years; although a stunning property, it's less than an acre, producing a mere 500 cases of this beauty each year. This wine ages entirely in new oak. more info
