In many ways, Antinori represents the entry port into Italy and Italian wine. It blankets two of the most archetypal areas of Italy, Toscana and Umbria, often the first regions that Americans visit. Antinori, an ancient and aristocratic family, embodies so many of the romantic notions that Americans have about Italy--the effortless grace, the mellifluous language and the attractive accent, the history that stretches back further than the eye can see, and the sense of ineffable tradition. And finally, Antinori's wines are easy for those palates unfamiliar with Italian wines to comprehend, and yet Antinori's wines always speak of their Italian roots.

Estate owner and patriarch Piero Antinori's eponymous estate covers a lot of ground in Italy. Unlike many of the estates that I tend to champion, it's no small family operation, even if it has been in the Antinori family for hundreds of years, and even if it's led by Piero and his three daughters. And yet, for all of its size--and for all of its power--it is one of the best estates and consistently makes delicious, serious wines of exceptional quality.

This week, I'm delighted to offer you some of the recent releases from Antinori-and one bottle of their Super-Tuscan Tignanello that reaches back to 1997. Some of these bottles come from their estate in Bolgheri on the Maremma Sea; some come from the Chianti Classico region in Toscana; some come from central Toscana; and some come from Umbria. But wherever they began, there's no denying that each of these bottles speaks of its Italian terroir, its winemaking traditions, and the ancient family that made it. Enjoy a bottle of one of Antinori's fine wines with someone who has never been to Italy-or with someone who has. There's a lot of pleasure for both groups to discover.

Guado al Tasso Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore 2007 750ml
Guado al Tasso Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore 2007 750ml
Price: $129.00

Upon release, the ripe vintage 2007 Guado al Tasso was praised for its bold, intense and delicious profile. Now with more than a decade of age, this wine is firing on all cylinders, layering its rich frutti di bosco with grilled herbs, licorice, melted chocolate, exotic spices, and cigar wrapper; tertiary notes of black tea, potpourri, and truffles murmur in the background. Tannins mellowed, the wine glides with a velvety texture into its finish that’s accented by crystalline minerals and savory herbs. A blend that shifts with every vintage, the 2007 Guado is about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. For the 2007 Guado al Tasso, Antinori fermented each varietal separately for 15 to 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged each varietal separately for 18 months in new barrique before blending and letting the wine rest in bottle for ten months before release. more info
