Giuseppe Mascarello – Newly Released Barolo Cru’s

Giuseppe Mascarello & Figlio is widely recognized as one of Barolo’s most important and historically significant producers. Established in 1881, the estate has remained in family hands for over a century, building a legacy rooted in traditional Piedmontese winemaking and a commitment to expressing the true character of Nebbiolo. Originally based in Monforte d’Alba, the Mascarello family moved to Castiglione Falletto in 1904, later acquiring full ownership of the renowned Monprivato vineyard in 1985—granting them complete control over one of Barolo’s most iconic crus.

The Monprivato vineyard lies in a prime location within Castiglione Falletto, known for its limestone and marl soils, which yield wines of remarkable finesse, aromatic complexity, and longevity. Mascarello’s approach has always been resolutely traditional: fermentation with native yeasts, long macerations—sometimes up to 30 days—and aging exclusively in large Slavonian oak botti. In 1963, the family planted a special plot within Monprivato with the rare Michet clone of Nebbiolo, and in select vintages, this parcel produces the estate’s most prestigious wine: Barolo Riserva Cà d’Morissio. Much like Giacomo Conterno’s Monfortino, it is released only in exceptional years, and is a collector’s treasure, often aged for over a decade before release and produced in extremely limited quantities.

While Monprivato remains the centerpiece of the estate, another key vineyard in the Mascarello portfolio is the Santo Stefano di Perno cru, located in Monforte d’Alba. This site, acquired by the family in the 1980s, offers a more muscular and powerful expression of Nebbiolo compared to the elegance of Monprivato. The Barolo from S. Stefano di Perno shows darker fruit, firmer tannins, and a brooding, earthy character that reflects the heavier soils and higher elevation of Monforte. It is a wine that complements the estate’s range, adding depth and contrast while

remaining rooted in traditional methods. Over time, this cru has gained attention in its own right, offering collectors and enthusiasts a more robust yet equally age-worthy expression of the Mascarello philosophy.

Today, Giuseppe Mascarello wines remain a benchmark for traditionally made Barolo. Their flagship Monprivato Barolo is viewed internationally as a bellwether for site-specific, classically structured Nebbiolo, while the Cà d’Morissio Riserva stands among the top tier of collectible Italian wines. In a region where modernization has divided producers, Mascarello has remained firmly committed to authenticity, a stance that has earned them both critical acclaim and a fiercely loyal global following. Still family-owned and operated, with Mauro Mascarello having passed responsibilities to his son Giuseppe Jr., the estate continues to represent a rare blend of continuity, heritage, and uncompromising quality. For collectors, sommeliers, and fine wine merchants, Mascarello wines offer not only aging potential and prestige but also a direct link to Barolo’s historical and cultural roots.

We are thrilled to offer you these masterful expressions of a family’s deep devotion to authenticity, reverence for the land, and enduring love for their craft.

The 2020 Barolo Monprivato from Giuseppe Mascarello is a masterclass in traditional Piedmontese winemaking and a compelling expression of one of Barolo’s most celebrated crus. Produced from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto—a site revered for its marl and limestone soils—the wine is crafted using time-honored methods: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, maceration for up to 26 days, and aging for approximately 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. This approach preserves the wine’s purity, structure, and sense of place, offering a beautifully transparent expression of both terroir and vintage.

The 2020 growing season was marked by a balance of warmth and freshness, allowing for full

phenolic ripeness without sacrificing acidity. As a result, the wine opens with refined aromas of cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and spice, followed by subtle hints of leather, tobacco, and mineral

undertones. On the palate, it is dry and full-bodied with firm yet elegant tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory finish. This vintage is already showing remarkable poise and aromatic complexity, but its structural backbone suggests it will age gracefully for decades.

While Monprivato is always a collector’s wine, the 2020 vintage stands out for its combination of

accessibility and aging potential. It offers both immediate charm—especially with decanting—and

long-term value as a cellar investment. Revered by critics and sought after by enthusiasts around the world, Giuseppe Mascarello’s Barolo Monprivato remains a benchmark for classic, site-driven Nebbiolo. The 2020 release reinforces that legacy with depth, clarity, and elegance that speak to the family's deep-rooted devotion to authenticity and tradition.

The 2020 Barolo Vigna Santo Stefano di Perno from Giuseppe Mascarello is a profound expression of Nebbiolo, showcasing the estate's commitment to traditional winemaking and the unique terroir of Monforte d'Alba. This wine benefits from the region's compact, iron-rich soils, which impart depth and complexity to the grapes. The vineyard's elevation of approximately 300 meters above sea level contributes to the wine's balance, with cooler nighttime temperatures preserving acidity and enhancing aromatic expression.

The 2020 Barolo Vigna Santo Stefano di Perno opens with a deep garnet color edged with subtle

orange hues, reflecting its aging potential. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits—think cherries and wild raspberries—interwoven with delicate floral notes of rose and violet. Beneath these vibrant aromas lie hints of earthy forest floor, sweet spices like clove and cinnamon, and a touch of leather, adding depth and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with fine-grained, dynamic tannins that provide a firm yet elegant backbone. Bright acidity balances the richness, while flavors of dark cherry, dried herbs, and subtle minerality unfold through a long, persistent finish. This Barolo displays both power and finesse, promising to evolve gracefully over the next two decades.

The 2016 Barolo Cà d’Morissio Riserva from Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is a rare and

exceptional wine, produced only in the finest vintages. Crafted exclusively from the ancient Michet clone of Nebbiolo, this wine originates from a select parcel within the renowned Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. The vineyard's silty-clay marl soils and southwest-facing slopes contribute to the grapes' complexity and aging potential.

The winemaking process is traditional and meticulous. After a manual harvest in mid-October, the grapes undergo fermentation with the cap submerged for approximately 20–26 days. The wine then matures for about 40 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by an extended bottle aging, ensuring integration and refinement.

In the glass, the 2016 Riserva displays a brilliant garnet color with orange reflections. The nose is complex and elegant, offering aromas of ripe red fruits, dried flowers, and subtle notes of licorice and balsamic herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied with robust tannins and a vibrant acidity, leading to a persistent, warm, and velvety finish.

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Cà d’Morissio is an exceptionally rare and prestigious wine, representing the pinnacle of Giuseppe Mascarello’s winemaking mastery. Produced in very limited quantities—only 4,541 bottles—this Riserva is crafted exclusively from the prized Michet clone of Nebbiolo within the iconic Monprivato vineyard, one of Barolo’s most revered crus. Its meticulous, traditional production and extended aging process ensure a wine of extraordinary depth, complexity, and aging potential. Collectors and connoisseurs regard Cà d’Morissio as a benchmark for Barolo Riserva, a true symbol of heritage, authenticity, and refinement. Owning a bottle of this wine is to possess a rare piece of Piedmontese history and an enduring testament to the art of Nebbiolo.
