Paolo Scavino is one of the defining names in Barolo, a producer that embodies both deep tradition and a refined sense of modernity. Founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, the estate has grown under the guidance of Enrico Scavino into one of the most respected voices in Piedmont. Scavino’s philosophy centers on purity of fruit, meticulous vineyard care, and a precise, polished style that still retains the soul of Nebbiolo. The portfolio is highlighted by single-vineyard Baroli from some of the region’s most prized crus—Bric dël Fiasc and Rocche dell’Annunziata, among others. These wines are known for their clarity, elegance, and remarkable balance between power and finesse, making them benchmarks for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Paolo Scavino’s wines occupy a special place in the world of Barolo not only for their quality in the glass, but also for their role in shaping the identity of the appellation over the past half- century. Enrico Scavino, who took the reins of the family estate in the 1950s, was among the pivotal figures who helped lift Barolo from a local treasure to a globally recognized icon. He embraced both modern and traditional techniques, always with a focus on clarity of expression: shorter macerations, careful use of French barrique alongside larger casks, and a relentless commitment to clean, precise winemaking. These choices placed Scavino at the forefront of the so-called “Barolo Boys” era, yet unlike many contemporaries, his wines have always maintained a strong core of terroir identity rather than being defined solely by winemaking style.
For collectors, Scavino’s Baroli represent both prestige and reliability. The single-vineyard bottlings are consistently lauded by critics and fetch strong demand on release, often appreciating steadily as they enter their optimal drinking windows. They are built for longevity, with the structure and freshness of Nebbiolo carrying them gracefully for decades, but they also offer a polished accessibility in youth that broadens their appeal. Beyond the crus, even Scavino’s “entry” Barolo delivers remarkable quality, making it one of the most intelligent buys in the category.
His contribution goes beyond the cellar: Scavino has been instrumental in elevating the perception of Barolo as a wine that can rival the greatest of Bordeaux and Burgundy, while still being distinctly and proudly Piedmontese. Today, with Enrico’s daughters Elisa and Enrica carrying the torch, Paolo Scavino remains a benchmark estate—proof that vision, rigor, and respect for the land can create wines that are both collectible trophies and deeply soulful expressions of place. The Paolo Scavino Barolo 2019 shows bright red fruit, rose, mint, and subtle balsamic tones wrapped in fine tannins and fresh acidity, with oak adding polish without masking Nebbiolo’s character. Approachable with decanting yet clearly built for aging, it will drink well from 2025 onward and develop gracefully into the 2030s, offering Scavino’s hallmark elegance at an accessible level.

The 2019 Ravera from Paolo Scavino is vivid and classically Ravera in style, with striking aromatics of crushed rose petal, lilac, mint, orange peel, white pepper and high-toned floral notes. The palate is tight-wound, nervy, and elegant: saline with firm, fine-grained tannins and a bright acid line that give lift and structure. Flavours include red and dark fruits like strawberry, cherry and a touch of blueberry, together with herbs, subtle balsamic and smoke, and an iron-mineral undercurrent. It’s powerful, very pure, and complex, with a long finish marked by candied raspberry, herbal tea, and mineral salinity. Best approached with patience—drink from 2026-2028 onward, and expect it to continue evolving into the mid-2030s.
Best Price $99.99 - 2 btls available
The 2019 Bric dël Fiasc is regal yet sensual, combining lush fruit and firm structure. On the nose, it delivers aromas of raspberry, cherry compote, kirsch, licorice, blood orange, dark spice, sandalwood, alpine herbs and an undercurrent of cold-smoke. The palate is full and powerful, with vibrant acidity and fine, ripe tannins that are both firm and refined, giving clarity and energy even under its intensity. The wine is medium-deep ruby-granate in colour, with a long, polished finish recalling menthol, tobacco, crushed stones, herbal tea, and persistent red fruit. It ranks among Scavino’s flagship Baroli: it’s built for aging, likely to open up fully and show its best from around 2027-2030 onward, and will continue evolving into the mid-2040s.

Bric dël Fiasc 2016 presents a deep garnet core and an intensely layered bouquet: dark cherry, cassis, licorice, tobacco and iron-rich earth are wrapped in hints of forest herbs, leather and menthol. On the palate it’s powerful and muscular, with very firm, fine-grained tannins and electric acidity that give structure and lift; the fruit is rich and generous (raspberry compote, Marasca cherry) but held in check by a feral intensity and long, spiced finish with subtle balsamic and mineral undertones. It’s in its youth-phase: austere perhaps now, but with magnificent pedigree. Given its architecture, it’s best approached with patience. While drinkable with decanting from around 2023-2024, its peak will likely be reached from 2026-2035 and should continue evolving through the 2040s.
Best Price $144.99 - 9 btls available
The 2016 Prapò from Paolo Scavino is a dark-fruited, intense Barolo showing black cherry, plum, dried currant, and touches of cloves, new leather, and menthol, all underpinned by that rustic Serralunga mineral edge. Its tannins are tight and gripping, acidity sharp, giving a powerful, structured profile; it’s full-bodied and concentrated, yet with a fine sense of precision and drive that holds everything in balance. This is very much a wine built for the long haul: best from ~2026-2028 onward, with peak drinking stretching well into the 2040s, provided it’s stored well.
Best Price $134.99 - 12 btls available
The Barolo D.O.C.G. Riserva Novantesimo 2011 is a rare, commemorative Riserva created to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Paolo Scavino (1921‑2011), made from the estate’s historic vineyards and honoring the traditions established by Lorenzo and Paolo Scavino. This exceptionally limited wine combines elegance and power, with layered red fruit, floral, mineral, and savory notes, and represents both a milestone in the winery’s history and one of the most collectible Scavino Baroli. By far the rarest of all the Scavino wines if you’re looking for that unfindable gem to cellar or gift look no further as this wine is as scarce as any on the market.
