The 2018 DVO opens with deep, dark fruit tones: baked plums, boysenberry, and rich black currant, alongside perfume of violets, forest floor, and Indian spice. On the palate it’s full‑bodied and plush yet muscular, with ripe, silky tannins and oak nuance (cedar, cedar bark, light walnut) that supports rather than overwhelms. There’s freshness from acidity and minerality that gives this wine lift and energy; a long finish shows dark chocolate, graphite, and a touch of scorched earth. Critics have praised it highly: Robert Parker called it “opulently fruited … a long mineral and earth‑tinged finish,” decanting its aging potential past 2030.
DVO is the new, high‑end collaboration between Napa Valley’s legendary Dalla Valle Vineyards and Tuscany’s Ornellaia. The idea: bring together Napa’s richness, hillside terrain, and fruit intensity with Ornellaia’s rigor, elegance, and experience with Bordeaux‑style blends. Fruit for the 2018 vintage is sourced from prestigious parcels in Oakville, Mount Veeder, and Coombsville, capturing both valley floor ripeness and cooler mountain elevation. Raised ~22 months in barrel (a high percentage new oak) with careful attention to extraction, maturation, and polish, it’s very much a wine built for collectors and aging—it shows through every component a respect for place and craft.
