These five vine plots are situated on the northern slope of Gevrey-Chambertin called the Côteau de Brochon. Thanks to the small, concentrated berries produced by these plots of old vines, we find here all the richness and fruitiness of a Gevrey-Chambertin, its velvety smooth tannins, its superb freshness and its length on the palate.
Not too long ago, Domaine Denis Mortet was the hot rising star of Burgundy thanks in part to the meticulous and creative Denis Mortet. The young winemaker, who took over the estate for his father Charles in 1991, was fortunate to spend time with Lalou Bize-Leroy and befriend the legendary Henri Jayer; you might say the winemaking school of thought and magic touch rubbed off on the young disciple. With the mentoring and lifelong friendships to Burgundy's King and Queen, the wines quickly achieved cult-like status until his untimely death in 2006. However, there is wine running in the veins of the Mortet family, and Denis's son Arnaud has picked up where his father left off, delivering the same attention to detail in the vineyards but with a more classic and subtle approach in the cellar. The wines continue to draw comparisons to Leroy and Henri Jayer for the detailed vineyard management and the end results of texture, mouthfeel, and sensuality.
