The 2021 Château Lynch‑Bages opens with a deep garnet‑purple core and an expressive bouquet of crème de cassis, black raspberries, wild sage and graphite, with hints of smoked tobacco and dark spice. On the palate it is medium‑to‑full‑bodied with dense dark fruit—black cherry and plums—supported by firm, grainy tannins and a vibrant acid backbone that lends freshness and drive. Mid‑palate complexity arises with iron‑rich minerality, pencil shavings and subtle cigar‑box notes, underscoring the estate’s superb Pauillac terroir. The finish is long, focussed and layered, carrying echoes of black‑currant, licorice and crushed gravel with a fine salty twist that elevates the wine’s structure. Though approachable with decanting, this wine is built to age: the balance of richness, energy and freshness suggests a peak drinking window starting in the late 2020s and extending through the 2040s.
Château Lynch‑Bages is a greatly revered estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. Under the stewardship of the Cazes family since the 1930s, the estate has grown its holdings and modernised its winemaking facilities while retaining deep respect for Pauillac’s gravel‑laden terroir and Cabernet Sauvignon‑driven style. The vineyards span roughly 100 hectares planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, set on the famed Garonne gravel soils adjacent to some of the region’s great estates. Winemaking includes parcel‑by‑parcel vinification, gravity‑flow cellar design, low yields and maturation in a high proportion of new French oak, yielding wines known for power, elegance and longevity.
