The product of a warm yet classic vintage, this '87 Brunello Annata embodies the grace, longevity and sheer class that made Biondi-Santi world famous. Now with more than three decades of maturity, tertiary notes of game, black tea, soy and truffles frame the primary red fruits and secondary notes of earth, pressed violet petals, baking spices and telltale Montalcino underbrush. Equally silky and vibrant, this wine shimmers across the palate with an elegant feel as it builds to a lingering, sneakily powerful finish--it's exceptional and will drink for another decade, possibly longer. Known for its nose and intense age-worthiness, a Biondi-Santi Brunello's trademark aromatics and acidity are attributable to the vineyard's altitude that ranges between 1,300-1,600 feet above sea level. Biondi-Santi's Brunello Annata, or normale bottling, undergoes fermentation in traditional Slavonian oak for about 18 days, followed by aging in large oak casks of 800 to 7,000 liters for a period of two to

Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Description

Established in 1880, Biondi-Santi was a winery destined for greatness. It was founder Clemente Biondi-Santi who launched his family's name in the wine business. But it wasn't until the late-19th century, with Ferruccio, that the estate at "Greppo" made its mark in viticulture history. It was then, in the renowned hills of Montalcino that Ferruccio took a clone of the Sangiovese grape, known as Sangiovese Grosso, and produced the first ever Brunello. Ferruccio's son Tancredi made the wine famous, officially classifying it as Brunello. Within a decade Biondi-Santi was receiving praise from wine-lovers everywhere. This new classifcation of Tuscan wine forever changed the Italian role in the industry. Today, it is Tancredi's son Franco Biondi-Santi who runs the estate, producing nearly 70,000 bottles a year. These remarkable Brunellos are best-known for their incredible ability to age. Even 100-year-old Brunello from Biondi-Santi shows remarkably well.
