The 2014 Reserva Especial is widely viewed as a “declassified” Barca Velha—crafted in the same spirit but reserved when it doesn’t earn that elite label. On the nose it shows intense aromas of black cherry, cassis, truffle, cedar, spice, and a rocky mineral vein. The palate is medium‑to‑full, firm and driven—fine tannins, vivid acidity, and a chewy, long finish that balances fruit and structure. It’s often praised as “Latour of the Douro” for its depth and class.
Casa Ferreirinha is one of the most prestigious and historic wine houses in Portugal, rooted in the Douro region and carrying on the legacy of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira (“Ferreirinha”) who championed innovation and expansion in her era. Over time, Ferreirinha has become a beacon for quality non‑fortified wines in Douro, producing a range that sits above local norms—Reserva Especial, Quinta da Leda, and even the legendary Barca Velha. The winemaking team, led by Luís Sottomayor, focuses on precision viticulture, elevation contrasts, and blending carefully selected plot components to achieve both purity and power.
