The 2016 Angélus opens in the glass with deep garnet‑purple colour and an intense bouquet of blackberry pie, ripe black cherries, candied violets, and subtle hints of rose petal, star anise, graphite and wood‑smoke. On the palate, it is rich and concentrated yet retains freshness and clarity: dark plum, blackcurrant and licorice are layered over a bed of fine chalky tannins and a mineral saline thread that speaks to the clay‑limestone terroir. The structure is regal yet refined—medium to full‑bodied with velvety texture, beautifully integrated oak and firm, poised acidity. Mid‑palate notes of tobacco leaf, cedar chest, and underbrush develop as the wine opens, while the finish is long, pure and persistent, showing crushed stone and black‑berry echo. Although already seductive, this vintage is built to evolve through decades—expect its peak drinking window to span 2024 – 2055+ with proper cellaring.
Château Angélus is a landmark estate in the Saint‑Émilion appellation, owned and guided by the de Boüard de Laforest family for generations. Located on a south‑facing slope of clay‑limestone soils, the château benefits from precise vineyard zones that allow Merlot and Cabernet Franc to shine. Winemaking under Hubert de Boüard and now Stéphanie de Boüard‑Rivoal emphasizes parcel‑specific harvesting, rigorous sorting, extended aging in new French oak, and since 2018 full‑conversion to organic viticulture. With its promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) in 2012, Angélus has become a symbol of Right Bank power, finesse, and heritage. The estate’s style marries profound structure with elegance—large‑grained tannins, lifted aromas and enduring cellar potential.
