The 2022 Quartetto opens with aromas of black cherry, plum, wild herbs, subtle spice, and a hint of earth. It offers a medium body with approachable structure: soft tannins are balanced by bright acidity, and the finish is clean, lively, and slightly savory. As with other vintages of Quartetto, this wine is appealing young but should benefit from a few years of bottle age to allow the blend to harmonize fully.
Poderi Aldo Conterno is a legendary estate in Monforte d’Alba, founded by Aldo Conterno and now run by his sons Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo. The winery is best known for its flagship Barolos from the Bussia cru (Romirasco, Cicala, Colonnello), but it also produces less formal blends to express Nebbiolo’s versatility. Their Quartetto line is one such wine—an experimental blend that brings together Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah sourced from various parcels in Bussia. The grapes are harvested by hand, vinified in stainless steel with 8–10 days of maceration, and then aged partly in wood to add structure without overwhelming the fruit. The philosophy behind Quartetto is to capture expressive aromatics, drinkable structure, and a touch of innovation while still reflecting Conterno’s rigor and site awareness.
