The 2018 vintage offered a cooler, even-paced growing season, yielding a wine of precision and aromatic finesse. The Arione 2018 opens with layered aromas of black cherry, blackberry, violet, licorice, graphite, and wet stone, alongside subtle notes of mint and tobacco. The palate is deep and compact, with tightly woven tannins supporting flavors of black plum, cassis, bitter cocoa, and savory herbs, underpinned by a signature iron-tinged minerality. Despite its formidable structure, the wine shows striking balance, with a long, resonant finish that carries both power and freshness. Built for the long haul, this 3L format will evolve gracefully over the next 30+ years.
Founded in 1908 in Monforte d’Alba, Giacomo Conterno is widely regarded as one of the greatest names in Italian wine, a benchmark for traditional and age-worthy Barolo. Under the leadership of Roberto Conterno, the estate continues its unwavering commitment to purist winemaking—long macerations, indigenous yeast fermentations, and extended aging in large Slavonian oak botti. The result is wines of profound structure, remarkable purity, and exceptional longevity. In 2015, Conterno acquired the Arione vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, a prestigious site adjacent to the fabled Francia vineyard. With its calcareous clay and iron-rich soils, Arione produces Barolo of darker fruit character, more muscular tannins, and distinctive mineral tension, complementing the elegance of Francia.
