The 2005 magnum opens with a deep ruby‑garnet colour and a striking bouquet of black cherry, plum compote, violet petal, licorice root and dark chocolate, all underpinned by a profound mineral core of graphite and crushed stone. On the palate, it offers full‑bodied richness yet retains an improbable clarity and finesse—dense layers of fruit are framed by refined tannins and notable acidity, giving the wine both breadth and structural precision. Mid‑palate complexity blossoms with hints of mocha, spice box, dried herb and iron shavings, adding layers without excess. The large‑format bottle enhances texture and provides excellent developmental potential; this is a wine built for long‑term cellaring, yet with enough energy and balance to reward earlier enjoyment as well. The finish is long and resonant, lingering with dark cherry, forest floor, cedar and a chalky mineral thread that speaks of place and age.
Domaine Ponsot, located in Morey‑Saint‑Denis in Burgundy, was founded in 1872. Today led by Rose‑Marie Ponsot, the estate is renowned for its dedication to vine age, low intervention, and the pure expression of terroir. Their vineyards include expansive holdings in the Grand Cru of Clos de la Roche—in fact they are the largest landowner in that appellation. The winemaking style combines long macerations, minimal new wood, and a commitment to letting the vineyard speak rather than the cellar. With extremely limited production, each release from Ponsot attracts the attention of serious collectors around the world.
