The 2019 Cuvée XXL is heralded as a modern masterpiece and a rare collector’s jewel, produced in minute quantities (just over 300 cases) and released only when the vintage exceeds expectations. A potent blend of approximately 65% Grenache and the balance Syrah (plus minor other varieties), with just 30% destemming and aged exclusively in demi-muids, this wine unveils stunning aromatics—ripe red and black fruits, herbes de Provence, ground pepper, and violet notes—with touches of incense and spice. Despite its immense power and opulence, the wine remains astonishingly balanced, retaining freshness and silky yet substantial tannins. Jeb Dunnuck scores it a perfect 100 points, calling it “pure magic… one of the most singular wines out there,” and projecting a long aging window through 2049. The mouthfeel is muscular and concentrated, showcasing sauvage nuance and herb-spice complexity, culminating in a long, refined finish that exemplifies the pinnacle of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pap
Domaine de la Janasse, managed by the Sabon family since its founding in 1967 by Aimé Sabon, has expanded to over 90 hectares, including around 15 hectares within Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape. The estate covers an impressive variety of terroirs and terroir-driven cuvées, including Tradition, Vieilles Vignes, Chaupin, and the rare Cuvée XXL. Known for blending Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and lesser-known varieties like Counoise and Vaccarèse, Janasse is distinguished by its commitment to organic farming, precise hand harvesting, careful destemming, and detail-focused barrel management. This philosophy has nurtured the domaine’s reputation for balanced, expressive, and cellar-worthy Châteauneuf‑du‑Papes.
