Bitter almonds, white wildflowers, tropical fruits, wild herbs, and a dusting of spices frame the tart, succulent orchard fruits in this '15 Friulano. Elegant and sapid, this wine feels crisp, brisk and lively as it glides to a food-friendly, mineral-inflected finish. Deriving from 60-year-old vines grown in clay and marl soils known as "ponca,"grapes stay on the skins for 24 hours, and after soft pressing, ferment for about a month in temperature-controlled stainless steel; the wine ages for five months in steel, before being filtered and resting in bottle for three months prior to release.
Masut da Rive possesses strong ties to Friulian tradition, having been established in 1937 by Antonio Gallo. Nevertheless, in 1979, the estate commenced a new period in its tenure under Fabrizio Silvano (fourth generation), gradually implementing both business operations and viticultural practices that supported modern viability. (Like Tocai Friulano, Masut da Rive also had some naming difficulties, as an American winery bore the same identity. Its new orientation was formally honored with the adoption of a new name-Masut da Rive of Fabrizio and Silvano. This transition reached its apex between 1991 and 1992, when Fabrizio eliminated old processes of pruning and training from the regimen. Friuli's modern phase began in the 1960s, when a crisp, clean white became the defining expression not only for Friuli but for the whole of Italy as well.
