The 2023 Grands‑Échezeaux shows great finesse even in its youth—aromas of dark cherry, red fruit, and subtle dark chocolate or cocoa bean, followed by undergrowth, fine leather, truffle, and cedar with time. On the palate it offers velvety texture, refined yet powerful tannins, and a long finish marked by minerality and persistent flavors. Despite the concentration and richness, it’s balanced with lift and energy; this is a wine built to age, with optimal drinking likely in 10‑20 years, and potential well beyond.
Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880, is one of Burgundy’s most esteemed domaines, with vineyards in many of the Côte de Nuits’ grand crus. Their Grands‑Échezeaux parcel sits in Flagey‑Échezeaux, just above Clos Vougeot, with steep, east‑facing slopes and deep, chalky Bajocian limestone soils. Drouhin farms here with great care: grapes are hand‑harvested, indigenous yeasts are used, whole clusters may be included (varying by vintage), fermentations are in open vats with gentle cap work, and ageing is in oak barrels (about 30% new) for 16‑20 months. Throughout, the focus is on translating site and vintage rather than overt oak or winemaking show.
