The 2023 Les Petits Monts opens with intense deep ruby color, wild cherry, rose petal, fine spice, and a subtle musk note. On the palate, the texture is silky, with refined tannins, lively acidity, and a beautifully balanced, energetic profile. Flavors of red and black berries shine alongside a mineral undercurrent that gives lift, while 40–45% whole cluster adds subtle structure and herbal complexity. Finish lingers, showing both elegance and persistence. Best enjoyed from around 2027‑2028, with excellent aging potential out to at least 2045.
Domaine Joseph Drouhin, established in 1880, is a benchmark Burgundy house deeply rooted in Côte de Nuits, including Vosne‑Romanée. Their holdings in Les Petits Monts benefit from clay‑limestone, rocky soils and a lovely exposure just above Romanée‑Conti, giving wines both elegance and depth. Farming here emphasizes respect for terroir: hand‑harvesting, low yields, indigenous yeasts, small open vat fermentations, and aging in French oak with about 25% new barrels—all designed to showcase the site rather than oak. Véronique Drouhin, who oversees Petits Monts, has long prioritized finesse, purity, and clarity as guiding principles.
