The color of the wine is a very deep garnet red, almost black. On the nose are black fruits with spices and ink overtones. The tannins are at the same time powerful and velvety. Smoky and pepper overtones are wonderful expressions of Syrah from granitic soil. Depending on the vintage, the wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years or from 50 to 75 years.
Rare is the wine connoisseur who is unfamiliar with Michel Chapoutier, winemaker at Maison Chapoutier, known as much for his outspoken nature as his extraordinary wines. This estate's roots in the Rhone date back to 1808, and while Michel's grandfather created the estate's reputation in the appellations of Ermitage, Cote Rotie and Chateuneuf-du-Pape, this estate owes its current renown to Michel, who took control in the late 1980s. Michel was one of the early adopters of biodynamic agriculture; ahead of the trend, M. Chapoutier went biodynamic more than twenty years ago, and Michel attributes his wines' outstanding balance, freshness and longevity to this protocol, although his exacting vinification methods are equally important. Michel Chapoutier sets the standard for the region, and the estate's wines are in demand, hard to find, and absolutely delicious.
