The 2010 Taurasi Radici exemplifies the power, structure, and age-worthiness of Aglianico at its finest. The bouquet is complex and layered, opening with black cherry, dried plum, and blackberry, interwoven with aromas of leather, tobacco, licorice, violets, and a distinct volcanic minerality. On the palate, it is full-bodied and firm, with tightly knit tannins, lively acidity, and great depth of flavor. Notes of dark fruit, cocoa, spice, and savory herbs unfold across the palate, leading to a long, persistent finish marked by earthy elegance. While already beautifully expressive, the 2010 has the backbone to age gracefully for decades, evolving into a wine of profound complexity and finesse. This is a classic Taurasi that not only reflects Mastroberardino’s mastery but also underscores why Aglianico has often been called the “Barolo of the South.”
Mastroberardino is a legendary name in southern Italian wine, widely regarded as the guardian of Campania’s viticultural heritage. Founded in the 18th century and based in Atripalda near Avellino, the estate has been pivotal in reviving native grapes such as Aglianico, Fiano, and Greco di Tufo. Antonio Mastroberardino, often called the “Patriarch of Aglianico,” worked tirelessly in the 20th century to preserve these historic varieties when many growers were abandoning them in favor of international grapes. Today, under the leadership of Piero Mastroberardino, the family continues to honor tradition while refining winemaking techniques. Their flagship wine, Taurasi Radici, introduced in 1986, is considered the benchmark expression of Aglianico, showcasing the grape’s nobility and the unique volcanic soils of Irpinia.
