The 2011 Taurasi Radici Riserva is a commanding yet refined expression of Aglianico from a warm and generous vintage. On the nose, it opens with layers of ripe black cherry, dark plum, and cassis, intertwined with tobacco, leather, licorice, and hints of violet. With air, nuances of smoke, balsamic herbs, and volcanic minerality unfold, adding to its layered complexity. The palate is full-bodied, dense, and structured, driven by firm but polished tannins and balanced by vibrant acidity. Flavors of macerated red fruit, cocoa, and earthy spice lead into a long, savory finish marked by subtle graphite and mineral notes. Already over a decade old, the 2011 Riserva shows wonderful integration and depth, but it still promises another 15–20 years of graceful evolution in the cellar.
Mastroberardino, often called the “guardian of Campania’s viticultural heritage,” is the historic estate that preserved and revived Aglianico, Fiano, and Greco after phylloxera devastated Southern Italy. Founded in the mid-19th century and still family-run, the estate has built an unmatched reputation for Taurasi, a wine often referred to as the Barolo of the South. The Radici Riserva is the estate’s flagship, a meticulous selection from their oldest and highest-altitude vineyards in Montemarano and Mirabella Eclano. The volcanic soils and varied exposures give the wine its hallmark power, depth, and long-lived structure, allowing it to rival the greatest red wines of Italy in both complexity and longevity.
