This 2010 Petterino Gattinara Riserva opens with a deep garnet hue with subtle orange rim, signalling both maturity and vitality. The bouquet is elegant and expressive: think wild cherry, freshly crushed violets, dried cranberry, subtle anise, rich forest‑floor and iron‑tinged minerality. On the palate it offers a structured core of dark plum and pomegranate, framed by fine‑grain yet firm tannins and lively acidity that energise the wine’s architecture. Mid‑palate complexity reveals graphite, cedar, distant spice and a touch of leather, underscoring the wine’s mountain‑soiled pedigree. The finish is long and persistent—saline minerality, cherry pit and undertones of licorice linger with clarity and finesse. Although approachable now with decanting, the wine retains ample structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more in a good cellar.
Nestled in the historic northern Piedmont appellation of Gattinara DOCG, Petterino is an extremely small‐scale, artisanal producer working just 2½ hectares across some of the region’s finest crus—Permolone, Castelle and Guardie. Viticulture is handled with meticulous care: hand‑harvested vines, extremely low yields and traditional methods prevail. The winemaking is intentionally unfussy but patient, featuring fermentation in open‑top vats followed by aged in large 25 hl botti for around three years, and then at least six months in stainless steel for natural clarification before release. Because of this extended protocol and tiny production (circa 1,300 cases annually), Petterino remains largely under‑the‑radar but highly prized by Nebbiolo enthusiasts and collectors seeking refined, site‑driven wines of longevity.
