2016 Poderi Colla Barbaresco Roncaglie Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: "Like the Cigliuti, this is a little and serious Barbaresco that would make Sergio proud. It is another one of those small family run wineries in Piemonte that somehow remains under the radar, despite being guided by one of the regions founding fathers - which is fine by us. The traditionally-spirited Poderi Colla Roncaglie is an expression that will outlive many Barolo from this historic vintage in the making for Piedmont. Poderi Colla Description

If you appreciate Barolo and Barbaresco, then the symbolic name of Beppe Colla is not new to you. The late and iconic winemaker of the Langhe Hills passed away last year. For many of us, it was this "founding father" of the region that helped get us acquainted with Nebbiolo through his time as the celebrated winemaker and owner of Prunotto during the '50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. Alongside Renato Ratti, few Baroloisti knew the region as well, and each were a vital source in drafting up the regulations for what would define the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco as we now know them today. In fact, it was Beppe Colla who was first to really develop and embrace the concept of single-vineyard bottlings and use the term "cru"on his labels in the sixties. After Prunotto, Beppe eventually came back and alongside his daughter Tina, they started the new family winery, Poderi Colla, based on the vineyards he felt produced the finest expressions of the noble Nebbiolo.
