The 2010 Il Carbonaione opens with a deeply saturated, almost blue‑tinged purple‑black colour. On the nose there is an intense bouquet of blackberry, blueberry compote, dark plums, pressed violets, graphite and smoke, layered with hints of licorice and black truffle.  On the palate the wine is full‑bodied with rich, concentrated dark‑fruit flavors—black cherry, blackcurrant—balanced by powerful yet refined tannins and fresh acidity. The minerality is pronounced: crushed stone, slate and an iron‑laced thread give lift and drive.  Mid‑palate notes include cedar chest, tobacco leaf and a subtle sanguine undercurrent. The finish is long, persistent and vivid, with a savory echo of herbs, violets and dark chocolate.  While accessible now with decanting, this wine is built for the long haul—expect peak drinking years from the later 2020s through the 2040s and beyond. Given its pedigree, structure and terroir, it is a compelling cellar choice for Sangiovese lovers seeking depth,

Scalette Description

Podere Poggio Scalette is a boutique estate in the Greve‑in‑Chianti commune, founded in 1991 by viticulturalist Vittorio Fiore and his wife Adriana Assjè di Marcorà.  The estate is planted on steep terraced slopes in the Alta Valle della Greve, where ancient vines of the Lamole‑clone Sangiovese thrive on well‑drained soils of sandstone, schist and gravel.  Their flagship wine, Il Carbonaione, is made from 100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone), from one of the oldest blocks on the estate, and reflects both the rugged hillside terroir and Fiore’s commitment to expression rather than volume.  The viticulture is meticulous: low yields, often south‑western exposures above 400 m, and careful selection ensure intensity. Winemaking combines traditional fermentation, aging in French oak tonneaux and bottle aging before release.  Over the years, Il Carbonaione has garnered acclaim for its power, elegance and age‑worthiness—earning 95+ point ratings for the 2010 vintage and is widely regar
