The 2017 ASTERISK is lush and inviting, with a medium‑to‑full body and a garnet‑purple hue. Aromas open with plum, baked berry compote, mulberries, red currant, cedar, bark, and hints of mushroom and potpourri. On the palate it delivers polished, firm tannins, juicy fruit, elegant acidity, and layers of toasted spice and dark chocolate. The finish is long, succulent, and gives plenty of pleasure now, yet this vintage shows a good backbone for aging — decant 1‑2 hours now, or cellar to 2035 for full expression. Critically, it’s been lauded for striking that rare balance between richness and elegance: “Plum with some mushroom, bark and cedar on the nose, following through to a medium‑to‑full body with polished, firm tannins and a delicious, juicy finish.”
SLOAN Estate, perched high on the eastern hills above Rutherford in Napa Valley, is among the most carefully tended boutique wineries in the region. Established at the end of the 1990s, SLOAN works with vineyards planted on rocky volcanic soils, sandy loam, and white tufa—soils that force vines to struggle for balance, complexity, and minerality. The winemaking team (led by Martha McClellan with consulting support from Michel Rolland) applies rigorous small‑lot selection, generous but thoughtful oak, and extended macerations to achieve wines of tension and depth. ASTERISK is the “second selection” from SLOAN: grapes mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that don’t go into the flagship blend, but still produced under the same exacting standards. Crafted to be more approachable in youth, yet with enough structure to grow in bottle, ASTERISK offers a more immediate, bold, juicy expression of the terroir.
