The 2016 “Gallina” opens with a dense ruby‑red hue and reveals aromas of bright cherry, blueberry, lavender and rose petal, layered with subtle spice and soft oak. On the palate the wine offers a vibrant interplay of juicy red and dark fruits, firm yet elegant tannins, and clean acidity that brings energy and freshness. Mineral undertones—chalk, crushed stone—and a gently smoky edge add complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is silky and resonant, with lingering notes of licorice and dried herbs. While approachable now with a little decanting, this Barbera is built for medium‑term aging and will reward patience as the tannins integrate and tertiary depth emerges.
La Spinetta is the boutique estate founded by the Rivetti family in Piedmont, known for its landmark commitment to Barbera and Nebbiolo from top hillside sites. Their “Gallina” bottling comes from a tiny parcel within the famed Gallina cru of Neive—vines are over 50 years old, planted on calcareous‑marly soils, and farmed with organic practices. The wine sees careful vinification: 100 % Barbera with moderate maceration, followed by ageing (often in well‑seasoned French barriques) to enhance texture while retaining varietal clarity. This focused approach allows La Spinetta to elevate Barbera into a serious, terroir‑driven expression.
