Marco DeGrazia's vineyard on the north slope of the volcanic Mount Etna isn't just among the highest in Europe; it is in fact the highest in Europe. While the wild island of Sicilia may rest in Italy's South, the vineyard's elevation of 700-900 meters above sea level gives its grapes an ideal condition of warm, sunny days and cool nights. The microclimate combined with the volcanic soil offers the estate's grapes a fairly fantastic growing environment, and the resulting wines have an ethereal, airy, almost mystical quality that has made many connoisseurs liken them to fine Burgundy.
