The 2019 Pym‑Rae is a powerful yet elegant Bordeaux‑style red blend composed of ≈ 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, aged ~16‑18 months in ~45‑55% new French oak plus concrete / small vats. The aromatics are rich and compelling: crème de cassis, black cherry compote, blueberry, lifted by notes of lilac, clove oil, licorice, tar, and exotic spices like cumin. The palate is full‑bodied and layered—ripe dark fruit, firm grainy tannins, bright acid backbone, minerally sparks, exotic florals, and a long, complex, multi‑layered finish. It has both weight and lift—luxurious but structured, built for aging: critics generally recommend waiting until 2026‑2028 to open, with peak potential stretching for decades. It’s a wine that speaks of opulence, mountain energy, and terroir clarity.
Pym‑Rae is the Napa Valley venture of the Tesseron family (owners of Château Pontet‑Canet in Pauillac), established when Alfred, Mélanie, and Philippine Tesseron acquired the former Robin Williams estate on Mt. Veeder in 2016. The vineyard sits high—around 1,800 feet elevation—on steep hillsides with sedimentary soils, marine deposits, shale, volcanic tuff, and strong drainage. Farming is fully organic and biodynamic (Demeter certified), with dry farming in many parcels, minimal intervention in the cellar, and hands‑on vineyard management (manual sorting, destemming, etc.). The estate produces very limited quantities—about 18 planted acres—and is clearly focused on expressing terroir, altitude, and vintage with precision and patience. The name “Pym‑Rae” itself is a tribute to Robin Williams’ children, combining their middle names, showing the intentionality and connection behind the project.
