The 2018 RunRig is a blend of Shiraz (98%) and Viognier (2%), sourced from six ancient vine sites across Barossa—some planted in the 1850s. Aged for 30 months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barriques, it’s a monumental wine. Aromas erupt with dark blackberry compote, roasted herbs, lavender, anise, and warm spices. On the palate, it’s plush and layered, with velvety tannins wrapping around flavors of black cherry, cocoa, smoked meat, and exotic spice. The small Viognier addition brings lift and aromatic complexity. Despite its power, the wine maintains remarkable balance and a long, harmonious finish. A truly world-class Shiraz—opulent now, but capable of evolving gracefully for 20+ years.
Torbreck Vintners, founded in 1994 by David Powell in the Barossa Valley, has earned a cult following for its Rhône-inspired wines crafted from some of Australia’s oldest dry-farmed vines—many over a century old. The estate is committed to traditional, low-intervention methods: hand harvesting, open-top fermentations, and maturation in French oak. Named after a Scottish forest, Torbreck pays homage to Powell’s heritage and to the rugged beauty of both Scotland and Barossa. Their top cuvée, RunRig, is often likened to great Hermitage for its richness and complexity, while still being distinctly Australian in character and scale. Today, under winemaker Ian Hongell, the estate continues its legacy of producing expressive, age-worthy wines from legendary vineyard sites.
