The 2016 Barolo La Serra is a brilliant expression of a vintage already regarded as one of the greatest of the 21st century. The bouquet is perfumed and refined, offering layers of red cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, intertwined with rose petal, violet, licorice, and hints of spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a striking balance between purity of fruit, vibrant acidity, and firm yet polished tannins. Subtle notes of graphite, earth, and minerals lend depth, while the finish is long, lifted, and finely detailed. Still youthful and tightly wound, the 2016 La Serra has decades of life ahead, promising to evolve into a wine of profound complexity and harmony.
Roberto Voerzio, the master modernist of La Morra, is renowned for producing some of the most coveted Barolos through a philosophy of radical yield reduction and meticulous vineyard care. His uncompromising approach often leaves only one or two bunches per vine, creating fruit of extraordinary concentration. Voerzio’s La Serra is one of his hallmark crus, a high-altitude vineyard characterized by sandy, calcareous soils and cooler exposures that lend precision, tension, and aromatic lift to the wines. Compared to his more opulent crus like Brunate, La Serra is celebrated for its linearity, mineral-driven finesse, and capacity to age with elegance and subtlety.
