The 2011 Langhe Merlot is a powerful and deeply expressive wine from a warm, generous vintage. Aromatically, it bursts with ripe blackberry, plum, and cassis, layered with violets, dark chocolate, licorice, and subtle graphite. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, with rich, velvety tannins and a core of dark fruit framed by spice and mineral undertones. The finish is long and persistent, with echoes of cocoa, truffle, and balsamic herbs. Still youthful in character, this 2011 has the structure to evolve for another decade or more, but already delivers a rare combination of intensity and refinement that makes it one of the most collectible Merlots of Italy.
Roberto Voerzio, based in La Morra, is one of Barolo’s most visionary and meticulous producers, famous for his philosophy of radical yield reduction and obsessive vineyard care. While Nebbiolo is the heart of his work, Voerzio also experiments with small parcels of international grapes such as Merlot, crafting wines that show how Piemonte’s terroir can elevate even non-traditional varieties. His Langhe Merlot is produced in minuscule quantities and has developed a cult following, often compared to the great Merlots of Bordeaux’s Right Bank for its concentration, polish, and longevity. This bottling reflects Voerzio’s uncompromising pursuit of quality and his ability to bring out a uniquely Piemontese character in Merlot.
