Marked by a dry spring, a hot summer, and a cool, classic and temperate harvest, 2016 saw a low-production, high quality vintage in Toscana, and the '16 Guado al Tasso flagship reflects its ideal conditions with a dynamic, lush profile. Balsamic herbs, crushed violet petals, warm earth, licorice, peppery spices, and a touch of minerality frame the crisp red, luscious blue, and brooding black fruits in the outstanding '16 Guado al Tasso. Velvety tannins feel burly upon the wine's release, but the underlying opulent structure suggests that with a little time in the cellar, this wine will bloom into a seamless beauty--it very well could be legendary. A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with about equal parts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Guado al Tasso is a thoughtful mix where each constituent grape adds something to a seamless, harmonious whole. Some nurture particularly close family ties, and a business serves as a traditional medium for honoring one's heritage. With respect to the Antinori and della Rocchetta families, however, viticultural genius truly seems to run in the family, rendering their Bolgheri triptych-Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia: Mario Incisa della Rocchetta); Tenuta dell'Ornellaia (Ornellaia & Masseto: Lodovico Antinori); and Guado al Tasso (Guado al Tasso: Piero Antinori) a powerful evocation of a wine dynasty. While Piero was technically the last of the family to enter Bolgheri's Maremma, Guado al Tasso formally established his claim to the Maremma, as it was founded upon land inherited by his mother, Carlotta della Gherardesca Antinori, whose family had a long-standing presence in the region.
