The 2016 Barbacarlo is a profound and wild expression of the Oltrepò hills, made from a field blend of Croatina, Uva Rara, and Ughetta, with a touch of Vespolina, from century-old vines. Slightly effervescent due to its traditional bottling before full fermentation, it opens with lifted aromatics of sour cherry, wild plum, violets, crushed herbs, and graphite. On the palate, it is rustic yet structured, with lively acidity, mineral tension, and fine tannins framing an earthy, spicy core. A wine that doesn’t follow conventional beauty standards, Barbacarlo is both cerebral and emotional — an experience that challenges and rewards the drinker with every sip. It’s not just a wine; it’s a piece of cultural heritage.
Lino Maga is one of the most legendary and uncompromising figures in Italian wine history. Working from a single monopole vineyard in Oltrepò Pavese, a hilly region south of Milan, Maga refused to industrialize or follow market trends. Instead, he focused on expressing his land with raw authenticity. His two wines — Barbacarlo and Montebuono — are produced in minuscule quantities from old-vine, co-planted field blends. Entirely hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and bottled with minimal intervention, they are singular, soulful, and defiantly artisanal. Maga’s approach was so personal that he even fought for legal recognition of the name “Barbacarlo” as unique to his vineyard.
