The 2018 vintage of Montebuono is an expressive, vibrant red, with wild cherry, plum skin, dried herbs, and a stony, graphite-laced minerality. On the palate, it’s taut and lifted, with finely grained tannins and a slight fizz that brings energy to the dark fruit core. There’s an earthy wildness here—floral, peppery, and slightly ferrous—that lingers with haunting persistence. More open and approachable than the 2016, it still maintains Montebuono’s characteristic depth and aging potential. A wine for purists and philosophers, it rewards patience and contemplation in equal measure.
Montebuono, the rarer sibling to Barbacarlo, hails from the same legendary monopole hillside in Oltrepò Pavese, cultivated for generations by the Maga family. Lino Maga, a fiercely independent winemaker, earned cult status for crafting wines that defy convention yet remain rooted in history and terroir. Montebuono is vinified with the same integrity: native yeasts, minimal intervention, no new oak, and often bottled before fermentation fully completes, resulting in wines with subtle natural effervescence and striking individuality. It’s a wine that speaks of place, legacy, and uncompromising vision.
