Matured in large Slavonian oak for four years and carefully nurtured in the famed “La Storica” cellar, the 1964 Riserva now reveals a tapestry of aged elegance. Visually, it presents a pale red garnet with tawny edges. The bouquet is both layered and hauntingly delicate: dried cherry, forest undergrowth, leather, tobacco, game, and subtle graphite notes, punctuated by forest-floor and herb nuances. The palate remains remarkably alive, showing complex forested spice, red currant, subtle acidity, and peppery lift. It may appear less vivacious on the nose compared to its past, but still delivers a deep, compelling sip—while some past critiques note occasional dryness or hollowed palate, the former bottle shown at Christie’s was described in top‑shoulder condition and recorked by the winery in 1985, a testament to its enduring quality.
Tenuta Il Greppo, home of the legendary Biondi‑Santi lineage, is the sanctum of Brunello di Montalcino’s origins and stylistic cornerstone. Founded in the late 19th century by Ferruccio Biondi‑Santi, this estate has steadfastly maintained a philosophy of restraint, patience, and authenticity—devoting itself to 100% Sangiovese Grosso (later formalized as the BBS11 clone) and long aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The Riservas, crafted only in exceptional years from the oldest vineyards, represent the highest expression of the house’s winemaking—yielding wines capable of sublime complexity and longevity. The 1964 Riserva, in particular, stands among the most revered vintages, chosen by the Italian Sommelier Foundation as the best Italian wine at the nation’s 150th unification anniversary.
