This 2010 Contino Reserva presents a deep ruby‑garnet colour with crimson glints, offering an inviting bouquet of ripe black cherry, wild raspberry, crushed violet and cedar chest, layered with minerally slate and gently melted dark chocolate. On the palate it marries depth and elegance: polished dark‑fruit core (blackcurrant, plums) is lifted by fresh acidity and framed by refined tannins. Mid‑palate complexity brings graphite, liquorice root, dried herbs and a touch of tobacco leaf, while the 1.5 L format enhances resonance and longevity. The finish is long and savory—echoing balsamic fig, underbrush and mineral extract—with plenty of energy still to unfold. While approachable now with an hour of decanting, this wine is clearly built to evolve gracefully well into the 2030s and beyond.
Established in 1973 as the very first château‑style estate in Rioja, Contino is a pioneering division of CVNE and represents the pinnacle of Rioja Alavesa winemaking. Its 62‑hectare single‑site vineyard is planted on alluvial, clay‑limestone, saline and sandy soils next to the Ebro River, and each micro‑plot is harvested, vinified and aged with exacting precision. The estate’s philosophy fuses traditional Rioja values—diverse old vines, indigenous varieties such as Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano—with refined winemaking inspired by the First Growths of Bordeaux: small‑tank fermentation, barrel ageing and site‑specific selection of grapes.
